Delhi to the Bhabha Valley

The Bhabha Valley runs north off the Sutlej at Wangtu, deep in Kinnaur — a green, forested side-valley that most riders on the Kinnaur road never see. Kafnu, a small village built around a hydel project on the Bhabha river, is the base and the roadhead for the Pin-Bhabha pass (~4,900 m) that crosses into Spiti's Pin Valley. It is one of the quietest corners of Kinnaur.

At a glance

Round trip
About 1,250–1,350 km
Riding days
4. Two days in (split at Shimla/Narkanda and near Sarahan), a day in the valley, one back
Nights
Nights on the road: 4
Start point
Delhi (via Chandigarh, Shimla and Rampur)
Highest point
About 2,900 m at Kafnu (higher on foot toward the pass)
Difficulty
Challenging. Long days on the exposed, rockfall-prone Hindustan-Tibet road, then a rough spur into the Bhabha gorge.
Surface
Sealed but variable to Wangtu on the Hindustan-Tibet road; the Wangtu–Kafnu spur is a narrow, rough, part-broken hill road
Best season
June to October for the valley. The monsoon (Jul–Aug) slides the Sutlej gorge badly — avoid it; the pass trail is a separate, high commitment.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur, then into Kinnaur past the Taranda cliff section to Wangtu, where a bridge and a check-barrier mark the turn up the Bhabha gorge to Kafnu.

From Kafnu you can ride a short way up the valley on rough track, walk toward the Mulling and Kara meadows, or (with proper preparation and a guide) take on the Pin-Bhabha pass trek into Spiti. The Sarahan temple and Sangla are close on the way in or out.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Narkanda

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda (8–9 hours with the Shimla crawl). Overnight Narkanda, ~2,700 m.

  2. Narkanda to Kafnu

Rampur → Jeori → Taranda → Wangtu → the Bhabha spur to Kafnu (6–7 hours, the gorge slow). Evening in the valley.

  3. Bhabha valley day

A local ride and walk toward Mulling; rest and acclimatise. Kafnu sits at ~2,900 m.

  4. Kafnu to near Sarahan / Narkanda

Retrace the Hindustan-Tibet road while it is quiet. Overnight near Sarahan or Narkanda.

  5. Back to Delhi

The last highway leg via Shimla. Leave early to beat the Shimla and Solan traffic.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Shimla and along the valley to Rampur.
  • Fill up at Rampur, and again at Karcham or Tapri if you can. The Wangtu–Kafnu spur has nothing, and Kafnu's supply is small and often dry — carry a 3–5 litre spare.
  • Kafnu has a PWD rest house, a hydel guesthouse and a few homestays, all limited and seasonal; Rampur and Sarahan have hotels. No signal in the valley. Carry cash and rations.

Road & conditions

Good near Shimla and Narkanda, then increasingly rough and exposed as you enter Kinnaur — the Sutlej gorge and the Taranda section are narrow, cliff-cut and prone to shooting stones, with gates during hydro blasting. The Wangtu–Kafnu spur is a narrow, part-broken hill road into the gorge. Ride the Sutlej section in daylight, never stop under a loose slope, and check road-gate timings at Rampur.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Easier with more torque and travel — a 250cc-plus or a small ADV. A confident rider can do it on a commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
Hospital at Reckong Peo; CHC nowhere near Kafnu; no signal in the Bhabha valley; the Pin-Bhabha pass is a serious high trek, not a casual add.
Altitude & acclimatisation ~2,900 m highest point. Gentle — the climb is spread over enough time that most riders adjust without trouble. Still: hydrate, skip alcohol, sleep low where you can. The day-by-day shows where you sleep each night.

Best time to ride

Mid-June to early October for the valley — green, and the spur road at its best. July and August bring serious slides to the Sutlej gorge; do not ride it then. September to early October is the clearest and coldest. The Pin-Bhabha pass itself has a narrow, snow-dependent window and is a serious high trek, not a casual add.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: warm and windproof layers for Kafnu (cold once the sun drops), a fuel spare, tools and a puncture kit, something for mild altitude, cash for several days, and ID copies for the Kinnaur checkposts. Full trekking and camping kit only if you are actually attempting the pass with a guide.

Kafnu is at 2,900 m and remote — treat the altitude and the isolation seriously. There is no phone signal in the Bhabha valley and little traffic. Spend the acclimatisation day gently, drink water, skip alcohol, and descend if altitude symptoms worsen. Do not attempt the Pin-Bhabha pass without a qualified guide, proper gear and days in hand — it is a 4,900 m crossing with snow and river sections.
The ROAR service stop on this route. Kafnu, the hydel-project area and the trail toward Mulling collect construction, grazing and trekker litter. We run a clean-up along the valley road and the first stretch of the pass trail, and carry the waste back out to Wangtu.

Ride this with a group

We run the Bhabha Valley as a small-group four-night ride into a hidden Kinnaur corner — the Hindustan-Tibet road paced and ridden in daylight, fuel carried from Rampur, an acclimatisation day at Kafnu, and a valley clean-up carried out to Wangtu.
