Delhi to Bundi & Kota
Bundi is a compact blue town in south-east Rajasthan, packed under the Taragarh fort and honeycombed with step-wells — the great Raniji ki Baori among more than fifty. Its palace holds the Chitrashala, a courtyard of turquoise-and-gold miniature murals. Half an hour away, Kota sits on the Chambal, with the Garadia Mahadev gorge viewpoint dropping sheer to the river below.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,050–1,150 km
- Riding days
- 3–4. A long day each way (split at Jaipur), with two days for the two towns
- Nights
- Three nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Jaipur and Tonk)
- Highest point
- Low plains and plateau — Bundi sits around 270 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. All easy highway and town roads — the distance and the city traffic are the only real work.
- Surface
- Excellent four-lane to Jaipur; good two-lane state highway via Tonk to Bundi and on to Kota
- Best season
- October to March. April to June is very hot on this route; the monsoon greens the Aravalli fringe but is humid. Winter is ideal, cool by day and cold at night.
The ride
Delhi → Jaipur → Tonk → Bundi on fast highway and a decent state road. Base in Bundi's old town, near the palace.
Bundi rewards slow wandering: the Raniji ki Baori and the cluster of step-wells, the Chitrashala murals in the palace, the climb to Taragarh fort (watch for langurs), and Nawal Sagar lake with the half-submerged Varuna temple. Then ride to Kota for the Garadia Mahadev gorge at sunset, the City Palace museum and the Chambal garden ghats, before turning for home.
Day by day
Delhi to Bundi
Delhi → Jaipur → Tonk → Bundi (8–9 hours). Long but easy. Settle in the old town.
Bundi
Step-wells, the Chitrashala, Taragarh fort and Nawal Sagar — all walkable or a short ride apart. Slow day.
Kota and the gorge
Ride to Kota (about 40 km), the City Palace and the Chambal ghats by day, and the Garadia Mahadev gorge for sunset. Back to Bundi or overnight in Kota.
Bundi to Delhi
Retrace via Tonk and Jaipur. Leave early to clear Jaipur before the evening.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the Delhi–Jaipur highway, Tonk, Bundi and Kota are all well served.
- No real gaps on this route; a normal tank range is plenty.
- Bundi has haveli guesthouses in the old town and a few resorts outside; Kota has business hotels. Book the old-town havelis ahead in the October–March season and around Diwali.
Road & conditions
Easy throughout. Four-lane to Jaipur, then a good two-lane state highway through Tonk to Bundi and on to Kota. The only slow going is city traffic in Jaipur and Kota, and the narrow, busy lanes of Bundi's old town — park at the edge and walk. Watch for langur troops on the Taragarh road and the usual highway livestock.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to March, with November to February the pick — clear, cool days and cold nights. March heats up quickly. The monsoon is humid and the step-wells can be full and murky. Avoid April to June: hard heat on the Jaipur road.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the cold nights, sun protection for the plains riding, a torch for the deeper step-wells, and cash for the old-town guesthouses. Nothing technical.
Ride this with a group
We run Bundi and Kota as a three-night Hadoti ride in the cool season — the highway day paced, the old town explored on foot, and a step-well and gorge-rim clean-up as the service action.
