Delhi to Chanderi
Chanderi, on the Malwa–Bundelkhand border in Madhya Pradesh, is a walled town under the hilltop Kirti Durg fort — a place of carved gates (the Khooni Darwaza, the Badal Mahal gate), step-wells (the Battisi Bawdi), the unfinished Mandu-style Koshak Mahal, and, at Thubonji, a hillside of rock-cut Jain colossi. It is also a living handloom town — the light Chanderi sari is woven here on pit looms you can watch.

The ride
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi → Lalitpur → Chanderi. Fast to Jhansi, then a good run south to the town.
In Chanderi: the Kirti Durg fort and the Khooni Darwaza, the Koshak Mahal, the Battisi Bawdi and other step-wells, the Jama Masjid and Shahzadi ka Rauza, and the weaver colony and its pit looms. Ride out to Thubonji for the Jain rock-cut figures and the Parameshwar Tal. The Rajghat dam on the Betwa is close.
Day by day
Delhi to Jhansi
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi (7–8 hours). Overnight Jhansi or Gwalior.
Jhansi to Chanderi
Jhansi → Lalitpur → Chanderi (2–3 hours). Settle in town; the fort at sunset.
Chanderi
The fort and gates, the step-wells, the mosques and tombs, the weaver colony, and Thubonji's Jain colossi. A slow day.
Chanderi to Delhi
Retrace via Lalitpur, Jhansi, Gwalior and the expressway. Leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the expressway, Gwalior, Jhansi, Lalitpur and Chanderi are all well served.
- No real gap; top up at Lalitpur or Chanderi before the Thubonji and dam roads.
- Chanderi has an MP Tourism property and simple hotels; Jhansi has more choice. Carry cash for the weaver colony and the smaller places.
Road & conditions
Fast and easy to Jhansi on the expressway and NH-44, then a good state road via Lalitpur to Chanderi. The fort road and the Thubonji road are short, quiet climbs. Inside Chanderi the old-town lanes are narrow and busy. Watch for highway trucks, city traffic at Gwalior and Jhansi, and livestock on the state roads. Nothing technical.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.
Best time to ride
October to March for comfortable riding and walking the open fort, step-wells and Jain hill. April to June is very hot on the Vindhyan scarp. The monsoon greens the country and fills the tanks but the fort steps get slick.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun cover and water for the open sites, comfortable shoes for the fort and Thubonji, a torch for the step-wells, and cash. Nothing technical.
Ride this with a group
We run Chanderi as a three-night ride to a fortress town of weavers — the gates, step-wells and Jain colossi, an afternoon watching the pit looms, and a step-well and hill-path clean-up as the service action.
