Delhi to Dharamshala
Dharamshala sits below its more famous neighbour McLeodganj, a lower-town base for the Kangra valley with the Dhauladhar range rising almost vertically behind it — snow on the ridgeline visible from the town itself for much of the year. It is the practical base: banks, a real bazaar, and easy access up to McLeodganj's monasteries without staying in the more crowded upper town.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 930–990 km
- Riding time
- 9–10 hours each way
- Nights
- One night is enough for the lower town; two lets you add McLeodganj at an easy pace
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh and Kangra)
- Highest point
- About 1,457 m at Dharamshala; McLeodganj above it sits near 2,100 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good highway followed by a straightforward hill climb — nothing technical.
- Surface
- Good sealed road throughout, including the climb from the Kangra valley floor
- Best season
- October to June. Winter can bring snow to the upper Dhauladhar ridge visible from town; the monsoon is heavy here — Dharamshala is one of the wettest hill stations in India.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Hoshiarpur → Kangra → Dharamshala, a long but straightforward highway run followed by the climb into the Kangra valley's hill towns. The Dhauladhar range dominates the skyline for the last couple of hours of riding.
Dharamshala itself is the working town — the Kangra Art Museum, the war memorial, and a genuine local bazaar. Ride up to McLeodganj for the Tsuglagkhang temple complex and the Dalai Lama's residence, or out to the nearby Norbulingka Institute for Tibetan art and crafts in a quieter garden setting.
Day by day
Delhi to Dharamshala
Delhi → Chandigarh → Hoshiarpur → Kangra → Dharamshala (9–10 hours). Settle into the lower town.
McLeodganj and the monasteries
Ride up to McLeodganj for the Tsuglagkhang complex, then Norbulingka Institute on the way back down if there's time.
Dharamshala to Delhi
Back through Kangra and Hoshiarpur. Start early for the long haul home.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — Chandigarh, Hoshiarpur, Kangra and Dharamshala all have pumps.
- Dharamshala and McLeodganj both have hotels and guesthouses across every budget, McLeodganj's skewing more towards backpacker and long-stay travellers.
Road & conditions
Sealed and in good condition throughout. The plains and lower-hill stretch to Kangra is fast; the climb into Dharamshala and on to McLeodganj is well maintained with steady bends, busier on the upper stretch given McLeodganj's popularity. This is one of the wetter parts of Himachal — check conditions if riding close to monsoon season.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to June is good, with October–November giving the clearest Dhauladhar views. Winter brings snow to the visible ridgeline, atmospheric from town, and is generally clear at Dharamshala's own altitude. The monsoon (June–September) is genuinely heavy here — this is one of the wettest hill stations in the country, and best avoided if you want clear views.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: rain protection is worth carrying even outside the core monsoon months, given how wet this area can get. A warm layer for the evenings.
Ride this with a group
We run Dharamshala as a flexible one-to-two-night weekend, based in the calmer lower town with an easy ride up to McLeodganj.
