Delhi to Dhosi Hill

Dhosi Hill is an extinct volcano — a lone 700-odd-metre cone rising off the plains where Haryana, Rajasthan and the Aravalli tail meet, near Narnaul. A rim path circles the shallow crater past the Chyawan Rishi ashram and a small temple, with a kund said to be where chyawanprash was first made. Below it, Narnaul keeps a cluster of Mughal-era water palaces, tombs and a chhatri that see almost no visitors. It makes an easy, flat, low-traffic overnighter — a good first night away.

Round trip
About 300–360 km
Riding time
3.5–4.5 hours each way
Nights
One night
Start point
Delhi (via Gurugram bypass and Rewari)
Highest point
About 740 m at the Dhosi crater rim; the ride to the base is flat plains
Difficulty
Easy. Fast open state highway, then a short steep sealed spur to the base car park; the crater rim is a 20–30 minute walk.
Surface
Sealed throughout to the base; the last km up the spur is narrow and steep but tarred. The rim path is a rough footpath, not rideable.
Best season
October to March. Winter is clear and cool with the best plains visibility from the rim; spring is hazy; April to September is hot and the bare hill offers no shade — avoid it.

The ride

Delhi → Gurugram bypass → Rewari → Narnaul on NH-11 / SH-26 — fast, open, four-lane most of the way and lightly policed. From Narnaul it is about 8 km on a country road to the Dhosi Hill base at Thana / Kultajpur, then a short steep spur to the car park.

Walk the crater rim (a shallow, grassed bowl, not a dramatic caldera) past the Chyawan ashram, the temple and the kund. Back in Narnaul, ride between the Jal Mahal (a Mughal water palace in a tank), Birbal ka Chhatta, the Tomb of Shah Wilayat and Chor Gumbad on a hillock — all within a few km, all quiet.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Dhosi and Narnaul

Early start, highway to Rewari and Narnaul (3.5–4.5 hours). Ride out to the Dhosi base and walk the crater rim before the sun is high. Afternoon among Narnaul's water palaces and tombs; night in Narnaul.

  2. Narnaul to Delhi

A cool early rim walk if you skipped it, or a slow loop of the remaining monuments, then the fast highway back — an easy half-day. Neemrana's nine-storey baoli is a short detour off the return if you want one more stop.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — pumps at Dharuhera, Rewari, Mahendragarh and Narnaul. No gap worth planning around; a normal tank does the round trip.
  • Narnaul has simple hotels and a couple of better ones on the bypass; there is no stay at Dhosi itself. Food is basic Haryanvi dhaba fare — eat in Narnaul or Mahendragarh. Carry water for the rim walk; there is no shop at the top.

Road & conditions

NH-352W and the Rewari–Narnaul highway are wide, fast and in good repair — the main hazards are overtaking trucks and tractor-trolleys, and dogs and cattle on the town approaches. The Narnaul–Dhosi country road is single-lane sealed with the usual broken edges; the final spur to the car park is steep and narrow, first gear in places, but tarred. Ride the town monuments slowly — narrow lanes, blind corners, people.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.

Best time to ride

October to March. December and January give the clearest air and the widest view from the crater rim — you can see a long way over the plains — and the walking is pleasant. February and March get hazy. From April the hill is baking, fully exposed and best avoided; the monsoon greens it up but the rim path turns slick and the plains run hot and humid.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: walking shoes for the rim path, a hat and water for the exposed climb, and cash for Narnaul. Nothing technical — this is an easy one.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The Dhosi crater rim and the Chyawan kund collect picnic litter and offering waste, and the Narnaul monuments — unstaffed and unfenced — gather plastic in their tanks and courtyards. We run a clean-up of the rim path and one Narnaul monument tank, and hand what we collect to the municipal point in town.

Ride this with a group

We run Dhosi as an easy one-night ride — a fast highway morning, a crater-rim walk before the heat, an afternoon among Narnaul's forgotten water palaces, and a clean-up as the service action. A good first overnighter with the group.
