Delhi to Dodital
Dodital is a small, spring-fed lake at about 3,000 m in thick oak and deodar forest in the Assi Ganga valley above Uttarkashi. It holds trout, has a Ganesha temple on its bank (local tradition places Ganesha's birth here), and sees a fraction of the traffic of the famous Garhwal treks. This is a ride-and-trek camp: two riding days to Uttarkashi and the Sangam Chatti roadhead, bikes parked, then a two-day forest walk to camp by the lake. Moderate, green, quiet.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 900–1,000 km
- Riding time
- 2 days to Uttarkashi each way; then trek days
- Nights
- 4–5 nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rishikesh, Chamba and Uttarkashi)
- Highest point
- About 3,000 m at Dodital; the Darwa Top option is ~4,150 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Highway and the Bhagirathi gorge to Uttarkashi, a short link to Sangam Chatti, then a graded two-day forest trek.
- Surface
- Sealed to Sangam Chatti; the Assi Ganga link road is narrow and rough in patches and has taken flash-flood damage in the past. Beyond the roadhead it is a trekking path.
- Best season
- April to June for green forest and rhododendron, and mid-September to November for clear air and the first cold nights. Snow can block the trail into April; the monsoon slicks it, brings leeches and has a flash-flood history in the Assi Ganga.
The ride
Delhi → Rishikesh → Chamba → Uttarkashi over two days on the Gangotri highway. From Uttarkashi a short road runs up the Assi Ganga to the Sangam Chatti roadhead; park and secure the bikes there.
Trek: Sangam Chatti → Agoda → Bebra / Manjhi → Dodital (camp), through steady oak-and-deodar forest. Strong groups add a day walk to Darwa Top (~4,150 m) for the Bandarpunch and Gangotri-group view. Local guide, cook and porters; the bikes wait at Sangam Chatti.

The long highway day home. (Add a day if you did Darwa Top.)
Fuel & services
- Fuel is fine to Uttarkashi on the Gangotri highway — Rishikesh, Narendranagar, Chamba, Uttarkashi.
- Top up at Uttarkashi; the Assi Ganga link to Sangam Chatti is short and a normal tank covers it. The bikes are parked for the trek — no spare needed.
- Uttarkashi has hotels and GMVN; the Assi Ganga villages have basic homestays; the lake is a tented camp, carried in or run by an Uttarkashi operator. Carry cash from Uttarkashi.
Road & conditions
Gangotri highway to Uttarkashi is sound but can have construction and slide sections in the Bhagirathi gorge — ride it in daylight. The Assi Ganga link to Sangam Chatti is narrow and rough in places and has a history of flash-flood damage; check its condition in Uttarkashi. Beyond the roadhead there is no road. The forest trail is straightforward but long with a pack; Darwa Top is exposed — usual lightning discipline.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospital at Uttarkashi; the lake camp has no road, no signal and no vehicle evacuation — a stretcher carry to Sangam Chatti. The Assi Ganga valley has a flash-flood history; camp above the stream and check the trail condition in Uttarkashi.
Best time to ride
April to June for green forest, wildflowers and rhododendron, and mid-September to November for clean post-monsoon air and cold, quiet nights by the lake. Snow can hold on the upper trail into April and returns by late November. Avoid the monsoon: the trail is a leech run and the Assi Ganga valley has a genuine flash-flood record.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a tent and a sub-zero sleeping bag (or the operator's kit), poles, warm layers, a first-aid kit, insect repellent, water treatment, and cash. The bikes are parked for the trek — no spare fuel needed. Add altitude awareness if you plan Darwa Top.
Ride this with a group
We run Dodital as a 5–6 day ride-and-trek — two highway days to Uttarkashi, bikes at Sangam Chatti, and a two-day forest walk to camp by a trout lake with a temple and a legend, with a lakeside clean-up as the service action.
