Delhi to Lakhamandal & the Kalsi Edict

Lakhamandal, on the Yamuna in the Jaunsar country below Chakrata, is a group of stone temples from around the 6th–8th centuries, the main one a fine Nagara Shiva temple with a courtyard of carved lingas and two guardian figures — local legend ties it to the Pandavas' lakshagriha (the house of lac). On the way, at Kalsi, one of Ashoka's rock edicts is carved on a boulder under a shelter — a 3rd-century-BCE message you can still read.

The ride

Delhi → Saharanpur → Vikasnagar → Kalsi for the Ashokan edict (a small ASI enclosure by the road), then either climb to Chakrata and drop to Lakhamandal, or follow the low road along the Yamuna directly.

At Lakhamandal: the main Shiva temple and the scattered shrines, the guardian statues, and the river below. The road on toward Naugaon and Barkot links this with the Yamunotri highway if you want to extend; Chakrata and Deoban are the obvious add for a third day.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Chakrata or Lakhamandal

Delhi → Saharanpur → Vikasnagar → Kalsi (edict) → Chakrata (8–9 hours). Overnight at Chakrata, or drop straight to a Lakhamandal-area homestay.

  2. Lakhamandal and the valley

The temple complex and the river in the morning; an easy afternoon back up to Chakrata and Deoban, or along the Yamuna.

  3. Chakrata/Lakhamandal to Delhi

Retrace via Kalsi and the plains. Start early.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Chakrata — Saharanpur, Vikasnagar, Kalsi and Chakrata all have pumps.
  • Fill up at Kalsi or Chakrata before the Lakhamandal road — the temple village has no fuel.
  • Chakrata has PWD and private guesthouses; Lakhamandal has a GMVN and a few homestays. Carry cash.

Road & conditions

The Vikasnagar–Kalsi–Chakrata road is a good, well-graded hill road. The Chakrata–Lakhamandal descent and the low Yamuna-valley road are narrow single-lane hill tar with broken patches and monsoon slips. Nothing technical. Watch for army convoys near Chakrata cantonment and timber traffic in the valley.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

March to June is green and mild. Mid-September to November is clear and crisp. Winter can snow-close the Chakrata stretch, though the low route usually stays open. The monsoon brings slips to the valley road — ride it dry.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the Chakrata evenings, a rain shell, and cash. Nothing technical — this is an easy one.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The Lakhamandal temple courtyard, the riverbank and the Kalsi edict enclosure collect visitor litter. We run a clean-up at both sites and hand the waste in at Kalsi.

Ride this with a group

We run Lakhamandal and the Kalsi edict as an easy two-night history ride into the Jaunsar country — a long day up, a slow morning among 1,500-year-old stone, and a clean-up of both protected sites as the service action.
