Delhi to Pancheshwar
Pancheshwar is the meeting of the Kali (Mahakali / Sharda) and the Saryu, on the India–Nepal border in far-east Kumaon at about 600 m. There is a Pancheshwar Mahadev temple on the ridge above, some of the most storied golden mahseer pools in the country, a KMVN rest house, and very little else. The last stretch is a steep, narrow descent through forest to the river.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,050–1,150 km
- Riding time
- 10–11 hours to the Champawat area, then a slow 2 hours down to the river
- Nights
- Three nights, four to take it easy
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rampur, Kathgodam, Almora and Champawat)
- Highest point
- Champawat sits ~1,600 m; Pancheshwar is down at ~600 m on the river
- Difficulty
- Challenging. The approach is long but easy; the final descent to the confluence is steep, narrow, rough and remote.
- Surface
- Sealed to Champawat; the descent to Pancheshwar is a single-lane, part-broken forest road with steep drops
- Best season
- October to March. Winter is mild at the river and best for mahseer and for clear water; the monsoon makes the Kali dangerous and the descent road treacherous — avoid it. Pre-monsoon April–May is hot in the gorge.
The ride
Delhi → Kathgodam → Almora → Lohaghat → Champawat, a long haul on good Kumaon hill road. From Champawat (or Lohaghat), a side road drops steeply through forest to Pancheshwar on the river.
At the confluence: the Pancheshwar Mahadev temple on the ridge (a local pilgrimage, busiest at Makar Sankranti), the wide green pools where the rivers join, and the footbridge to the Nepal bank. It is a place to sit by the water for a day. The Mayawati Ashram near Lohaghat and Abbott Mount are close on the way back.
Day by day
Delhi to Almora
Delhi → Kathgodam → Almora (9–10 hours). Overnight Almora.
Almora to Champawat
Almora → Lohaghat → Champawat (3–4 hours on good ridge road). Overnight Champawat or Lohaghat.
Down to Pancheshwar
The steep forest descent to the confluence (about 2 hours for 40-odd km). Settle at the KMVN; afternoon by the river and up to the temple.
Pancheshwar to Champawat / start back
Ride back up in the cool morning, then begin the return via Almora, or spend another slow day at the river first.
Champawat to Delhi
The long highway leg home via Almora. First light.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Champawat — Almora, Lohaghat and Champawat have pumps.
- Fill up at Champawat or Lohaghat before the descent. Pancheshwar has no fuel, and the climb back out is not a place to run low.
- Pancheshwar has a KMVN rest house and a couple of basic lodges near the temple; Champawat and Lohaghat have simple hotels. Carry cash. Anglers should check the current catch-and-release rules and any permit the fisheries department requires.
Road & conditions
Good Kumaon hill highway all the way to Champawat. The descent to Pancheshwar is the demanding part: a single-lane forest road, steep, with broken edges, blind bends and long drops to the river, and no traffic to speak of. Ride it slowly, in daylight, in low gear both ways, and check your brakes before the descent. Do not attempt it in the monsoon, when the road slips and the Kali is in spate.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Easier with more torque and travel — a 250cc-plus or a small ADV. A confident rider can do it on a commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospital at Champawat; nothing at the confluence; the descent road is steep and remote with no traffic — ride it slow both ways; signal is poor at the river.
Best time to ride
October to March is the window: mild at the river, clear green water, and the best season for mahseer. December to February nights are cool but pleasant in the gorge. The monsoon makes the Kali dangerous and the descent road unsafe. April and May get hot down at 600 m. Makar Sankranti (mid-January) brings a big local temple crowd — plan around it.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a layer for the cool ridge nights (the river itself stays mild), good brakes and a low-gear descent technique for the drop to the confluence, basic tools, and cash. If you fish, your own gear and knowledge of the catch-and-release rules.
Ride this with a group
We run Pancheshwar as a quiet three- or four-night ride to the Kali confluence — the long approach split at Almora, the steep descent ridden slow in daylight, and a riverbank and temple-path clean-up as the service action.
