Delhi to the Parvati Valley

The Parvati Valley runs east off the Kullu valley at Bhuntar — a deep gorge of deodar, apple orchards and old wood-and-stone hamlets. Kasol is the base; Manikaran has hot springs sacred to Sikhs and Hindus; Tosh, Kalga and Pulga are the last motorable villages; and from Barshaini a walk of about 12 km climbs to the Kheerganga hot spring on a meadow at roughly 3,000 m.

At a glance

Round trip
About 1,050–1,150 km on the bike, plus ~24 km on foot if you add Kheerganga
Riding + trek
Two riding days to Kasol (split at Mandi), and a Kheerganga day-hike or camp night
Nights
Nights: 3 (add one on the meadow if you camp at Kheerganga)
Start point
Delhi (via Chandigarh, Mandi and Bhuntar)
Highest point
About 1,650 m at Kasol; 3,000 m at Kheerganga on foot
Difficulty
Moderate. The ride is a narrow, rough valley road; the Kheerganga walk is a busy but non-technical climb.
Surface
Sealed to Barshaini via Bhuntar, but narrow, broken and slide-prone through the gorge; the Kheerganga trail is a stone-and-mud path
Best season
April to June and September to November. The monsoon slides the gorge road badly; winter snows the upper villages and the Kheerganga meadow.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Bhuntar, then turn up the Parvati gorge — Jari, Kasol, Manikaran — to the road-end at Barshaini. The villages above (Tosh, Kalga, Pulga) are short, steep spurs or a walk from there.

For Kheerganga, leave the bikes at Barshaini and walk about 12 km up through Nakthan and Rudra Nag to the hot spring and meadow. Most people day-hike it; a camp night gives a soak under the stars and a quiet dawn before the crowd arrives. Manikaran's gurdwara and hot-spring baths are a fixed stop on the way in or out.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Mandi

Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi (9–10 hours). Overnight Mandi.

  2. Mandi to Kasol

Mandi → Bhuntar → Kasol (3–4 hours on the narrow gorge road). Settle at Kasol or Tosh; Manikaran on the way.

  3. Kheerganga, or the villages

Ride to Barshaini and walk to Kheerganga (day-hike or camp), or spend the day among Tosh, Kalga and Pulga.

  4. Kasol to Delhi

Down the gorge early, then the long highway home via Mandi. First light.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Bhuntar on the Kullu highway.
  • Fill up at Bhuntar or Kasol before Barshaini — the upper valley has no reliable fuel, and the villages above the road have none.
  • Kasol, Tosh and Kalga have guesthouses and cafes across every budget; Kheerganga has seasonal camps and tents only. Weekends and the spring/autumn peaks are busy. Carry cash — signal drops above Kasol.

Road & conditions

Delhi to Bhuntar is highway and the widened Kullu road. The Parvati gorge road from Bhuntar to Barshaini is narrow, part-broken, cut into the hillside above the river, and genuinely slide-prone in and after the monsoon — there are stretches with active rockfall. Ride it slowly, in daylight, and never stop under a loose slope. The Kheerganga trail is a busy, well-worn stone-and-mud path.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

Late April to June is green with the orchards in leaf. Mid-September to November is clear and settled after the monsoon. Avoid July and August — the gorge road slides and the trail turns to mud. Winter snows the upper villages and the Kheerganga meadow, and the last road stretch can ice up.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: warm layers for the valley evenings, trekking shoes and a daypack for Kheerganga (and a bag rated near freezing plus a headlamp if you camp), a rain shell, and cash. Nothing technical on the bike, but ride the gorge with care.

Ride the Parvati your own way — the valley has a reputation, and people do go missing here. Stick with the group, tell someone your plan, do not wander off marked trails or accept lifts or 'shortcuts' from strangers, and keep well clear of the drug trade that operates in parts of the valley — it draws trouble and the law is unforgiving. On Kheerganga, camp only on the designated ground with an operator, carry out every wrapper, and light no fires.
The ROAR service stop on this route. Kasol, the Kheerganga trail and the meadow, and the Manikaran riverbank carry heavy visitor litter — the Parvati is one of the worst-hit valleys in Himachal for it. We run a carry-down clean-up of the Kheerganga trail and meadow and a sweep of the Kasol riverbank, with the waste carried out to Bhuntar.

Ride this with a group

We run the Parvati Valley as a three-night ride with an optional hot-spring walk — the slide-prone gorge road ridden slow and dry, the group kept together, a camp only on the designated ground at Kheerganga, and a trail-and-riverbank clean-up carried out.
