Delhi to Rewalsar (Tso Pema)
Rewalsar, in the hills south of Mandi at about 1,360 m, is a small dark lake ringed by shrines of three faiths at once. To Tibetan Buddhists it is Tso Pema, the lake from which Padmasambhava rose on a lotus; a giant statue of him looks down from the ridge, with monasteries around the water. Sikhs revere it for Guru Gobind Singh's stay; Hindus for its temples to Lomas Rishi and Shiva. Islands of matted reed drift on the surface.

The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi, then the 24 km hill road up to Rewalsar. The whole point is a slow day walking the lake shore.
Around the water: the Padmasambhava statue and the climb to the Rewalsar caves and the smaller Kunt Bhyog lakes above, the Drikung Kagyu and Nyingma monasteries, the gurdwara, and the Hindu temples — all on one lap. Naina Devi (the Shaktipeeth above the Gobind Sagar) and Mandi's old town of temples are easy adds on the way in or out.
Day by day
Delhi to Rewalsar
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Rewalsar (8–9 hours). Settle by the lake.
Rewalsar
The lake circuit, the Padmasambhava statue and the caves, the monasteries and temples, and the Kunt Bhyog lakes above. A slow day. Add Mandi's old town if you have the afternoon.
Rewalsar to Delhi
Down through Mandi and the fast highway home. Start early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the Chandigarh–Bilaspur–Mandi highway is well served, and Mandi has plenty of pumps.
- Fill up at Mandi before the Rewalsar climb — the lake town has only a small pump.
- Rewalsar has monastery guesthouses, a gurdwara sarai and simple hotels — the monastery stays are the pick. Carry some cash. It is busy around Buddhist festival dates.
Road & conditions
Delhi to Mandi is a good hill highway, fast in the plains and steady in the hills. The Mandi–Rewalsar road is a sound 24 km climb with regular bends. Nothing technical. Watch for Mandi town traffic and, on the lake road, buses and pilgrim vehicles at festival times.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to June. Winter is cold but clear and quiet; spring is mild; summer is a pleasant escape from the plains heat. The monsoon greens the hills but can make the Mandi–Rewalsar road greasy and the lake shore muddy.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the lake evenings, modest clothing for the monasteries and temples, a rain shell, and cash. Nothing technical.
Ride this with a group
We run Rewalsar as an easy two-night ride to a lake three faiths share — a short highway run, a slow day on the shore circuit, and a lakeshore-and-path clean-up as the service action.
