Delhi to Sitlakhet & Syahi Devi
Sitlakhet (Sheetlakhet) is a quiet ridge at about 1,830 m near Almora — pine forest, apple and peach orchards, a KMVN and very little else. A short walk from the road climbs through oak to the Syahi Devi temple on a wooded summit at about 2,100 m, with a clean line of the Kumaon Himalaya from Trishul to Nanda Devi. It makes a gentle first hill ride.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 760–840 km
- Riding time
- 9–10 hours each way — a long but easy day, splittable at Nainital/Bhowali
- Nights
- Two nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rampur, Kathgodam and Bhowali)
- Highest point
- About 2,100 m at the Syahi Devi temple
- Difficulty
- Easy. Good sealed hill roads throughout and a short, gentle walk to the temple. A sound first-hills ride.
- Surface
- Sealed and in good condition — Kathgodam–Bhowali–Almora and the quiet Sitlakhet spur are all well kept
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. Winter is cold and can bring light snow; the monsoon is green but clouds the view and brings leeches to the oak.
The ride
Delhi → Rampur → Kathgodam → Bhowali (skirting Nainital's traffic) → the Almora road, then the quiet turn to Sitlakhet. It is a place to sit still — orchards, a temple, a ridge to walk.
The Syahi Devi walk is about 3 km up through oak, easy but for the last pull. Nearby, Kasar Devi ridge and the Almora bazaar are worth a half-day, and the Jageshwar temple grove is close if you want more.
Day by day
Delhi to Sitlakhet
Delhi → Kathgodam → Bhowali → Almora road → Sitlakhet (9–10 hours). Settle on the ridge.
Syahi Devi and the ridge
Walk up to the Syahi Devi temple for the Himalayan view, then an easy afternoon in the orchards or over at Kasar Devi and Almora.
Sitlakhet to Delhi
Down through Bhowali and the long highway home. Start early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — Rampur, Haldwani, Kathgodam, Bhowali and Almora all have pumps.
- Sitlakhet itself has no pump; fill at Bhowali or on the Almora road.
- Sitlakhet has a KMVN and a few orchard homestays; Almora has the full range. Weekends are quiet here. Carry some cash.
Road & conditions
All sealed and in good shape. The plains leg to Kathgodam is the slow, busy part; from Bhowali the hill road to the Almora side and the Sitlakhet spur are smooth and lightly used. The Syahi Devi trail is a simple forest walk. Watch for Nainital weekend traffic around Bhowali and the odd cattle on the bazaar stretches.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
Mid-September to November is clear and crisp with sharp Trishul and Nanda Devi views. March to June is mild with orchard blossom then fruit. Winter is cold and can dust the ridge with snow. The monsoon is lush but cloudy, with leeches on the Syahi Devi walk.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evenings, walking shoes for the temple trail, and some cash. Nothing else — this is an easy one.
Ride this with a group
We run Sitlakhet and Syahi Devi as an easy two-night first-hills ride — a relaxed pace, a short temple walk for the view, and a trail clean-up as the service action.
