Delhi to Spiti's High Villages

Above Kaza, a loop of rough roads climbs the Spiti plateau to the villages that top every list: Langza with its giant hillside Buddha and its fossil beds; Komic, among the highest motorable villages in the world at about 4,590 m, with its Tangyud monastery; Hikkim, home of the world's highest post office; and Demul, a herding village reached by a steep rough climb. It is the high-altitude heart of Spiti, off the main circuit.

The ride

Delhi → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Kinnaur → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza — the standard Kinnaur-to-Spiti approach, done over three days so you climb gradually.

From Kaza, base for two nights and ride the high loop: Langza (Buddha, fossils), Komic (Tangyud monastery, the ‘highest village’ sign), Hikkim (post a letter from the highest post office), and the steep, rough climb to Demul. Key monastery, Kibber and the Chicham bridge are the obvious add-ons.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Narkanda

    Delhi → Shimla → Narkanda (8–9 hours). Overnight Narkanda, ~2,700 m.

  2. Narkanda to Kalpa

Rampur → Jeori → the Sutlej gorge → Kalpa (6–7 hours). Overnight Kalpa, ~2,960 m — a useful acclimatisation step.

  3. Kalpa to Kaza

Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza (7–8 hours over Kinnaur/Spiti roads). Overnight Kaza, ~3,650 m. Take it easy.

  4. Acclimatisation and Key/Kibber

An easy day: Key monastery, Kibber, the Chicham bridge. No big height gain.

  5. The high-villages loop

Langza, Komic, Hikkim and the Demul climb from Kaza and back. A full, rough day at altitude.

  6. Kaza to Kalpa/Sangla

Retrace toward Kinnaur while the roads are quiet. Overnight Kalpa or Sangla.

  7. Back to Delhi

The long highway legs home over one to two days. First light.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Shimla and along the valley to Rampur.
  • Fill at Rampur, then at Reckong Peo. Kaza has the only pump in Spiti — fill completely there before the high loop. Carry a 5–10 litre spare for the whole Spiti section.
  • Kaza has hotels and homestays; Langza, Komic, Hikkim and Demul have village homestays only, basic and seasonal. Nights are cold year-round. Carry cash — the Kaza ATM is unreliable — and rations.

Road & conditions

Sealed but broken and cliff-cut through the Sutlej gorge and Kinnaur; the Kinnaur–Spiti stretch (Nako, Tabo) is a mix of blacktop and rough patches with stream crossings. The Langza–Komic–Hikkim loop is rough graded track at 4,000 m-plus; the Demul climb is steep, loose and exposed. It is the altitude and the surfaces, not trials obstacles, that make it hard. Ride mornings, in the dry, in a tight group.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Needs a dirt-capable bike (an ADV or a light dual-sport) and off-road experience. Not a commuter route.
Fuel gap
A serious fuel gap on this route — carry spare fuel and fill every chance you get.
Spare fuel
Carry 10 litres or more of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
Hospital at Kaza only; the high villages have health sub-centres at best; no signal on the loop; evacuation to Kaza then Shimla/Manali is a long day — satellite messenger essential.
Altitude & acclimatisation ~4,590 m highest point. Aggressive — you reach thin air fast. Do not skip the acclimatisation stops, sleep as low as the stages allow, and descend immediately for anyone with worsening headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness. The day-by-day shows where you sleep each night.

Best time to ride

June to September only. The Kinnaur approach slides badly in July and August — ride the shoulders of the monsoon or accept delays. The high village roads open late (often not until late June) and can shut after any snow. September is the clearest and coldest.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: expedition-grade cold layers, a down jacket, thermal gloves and socks, a balaclava, a fuel spare, full tools, spare levers and cables, two tubes, a puncture kit, a first-aid kit with altitude medication (discuss Diamox with a doctor first), water treatment, high-calorie food, a power bank and ideally a satellite messenger. Cash for the whole trip.

You sleep above 3,600 m for days and ride to 4,600 m — acclimatise properly or don't go. Climb gradually (Kalpa, then Kaza, then the high loop), take the Kibber day with no height gain, drink water, skip alcohol, and descend immediately for anyone with worsening headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness. Ride the village roads only in the dry morning, keep the group together, and do not push a weather window — help is a long way down.
The ROAR service stop on this route. Langza, Komic, Hikkim and Demul, and the Kaza approach, are seeing fast-growing tourist litter. We run a carry-out clean-up of the four villages and the loop road, haul everything back to Kaza, and ride through the settlements at walking pace.

Ride this with a group

We run Spiti's high villages as a vetted six- or seven-day expedition — a graded climb through Kinnaur, an acclimatisation day at Kaza, the high loop ridden only in the dry morning, satellite comms carried, and a village clean-up hauled back to Kaza.
