Where to ride in winter
December to February closes the high passes, but it opens the best of the dry country and turns the low hills into snow-trek country. Mornings are cold and foggy on the plains — start late — and the shaded hill bends can ice up. Here is where winter works.
Desert & forts at their best
The cool season is the only sensible time for the Rajasthan and Gujarat routes:
- Delhi to Jaisalmer — the Thar in the one window it is not dangerously hot
- Delhi to Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur — the Great Wall of India, cold clear nights at the fort
- Delhi to the Rann of Kutch — the white salt desert — aim for the days around a full moon
- Delhi to Mount Abu — Rajasthan's only hill station, genuinely cold after dark
Wildlife, foggy and quiet
Winter is prime season on the terai and in the tiger reserves:
- Delhi to Pilibhit — an easy weekend to a quiet reserve on the Nepal border
- Delhi to Dudhwa — tall-grass terai, the biggest swamp-deer herds gather now
- Delhi to Ranthambhore — a fast expressway run to the tiger fort
Ride to a snow trek
You ride to the roadhead, secure the bikes, and walk up into the snow:
- Delhi to Kedarkantha via Sankri — the classic winter summit trek
- Delhi to Brahmatal via Lohajung — a frozen ridge lake facing Trishul
Cold-ride kit.
Genuinely warm layers, a windproof, thermal gloves, and a plan for iced shaded bends on the hill routes. For the snow treks, full winter camping gear — see the route notes.
