Delhi to Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary

Asola Bhatti sits inside Delhi's own southern edge, a genuine forest sanctuary folded into the Aravalli ridge with a recorded leopard population, nilgai, and a surprising range of birdlife for a reserve this close to a capital city. It needs no overnight and barely any riding — the point is that real wilderness survives this close to the traffic.

The ride

Delhi → Tughlaqabad → Asola Bhatti, a short ride to the edge of the city's own southern Aravalli ridge — this is the shortest, most unusual entry in the whole library, a genuine wildlife sanctuary you can reach on a weekday evening if timing allows.

The sanctuary protects real Aravalli scrub-forest habitat, with a documented leopard population (rarely seen, but present), nilgai, jackal and a strong list of resident and migratory birds. Walk the marked nature trails from the entry point — motorcycles stay at the gate, and this is a walking visit, not a ride-through.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Asola Bhatti and back

Delhi → Tughlaqabad → Asola Bhatti (1.5–2 hours), a walk on the marked trails, and back the same day — easily done in a morning or afternoon.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is trivial on this short a route — top up in Delhi before you leave if needed.
  • No overnight stay is relevant for this trip.

Road & conditions

Sealed city and edge-of-city roads the whole way — this is the shortest, easiest entry point in the library by distance, though city traffic on the approach can be slower than the km would suggest. Inside the sanctuary itself, motorcycles are left at the entrance and the visit continues on foot.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on any road-legal commuter.
Fuel gap
None. This route never runs a genuine gap.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the district town, under two hours off; signal is reliable for most of this route; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to March gives the most comfortable walking conditions and the best chance of general bird activity. The sanctuary is open through summer too, but the exposed Aravalli scrub gets genuinely hot by mid-morning in that season.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: comfortable walking shoes, water, and binoculars if you have them. Nothing technical.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The entry trails and picnic areas near the gate collect litter from weekend visitors. We run a short clean-up along the accessible trail stretches when the group visits.

Ride this with a group

We run Asola Bhatti as a quick, easy half-day reminder that real forest survives inside the city itself — a good short outing between longer trips.
