Delhi to Keetham Lake & the Bear Rescue

Sur Sarovar — better known as Keetham Lake — is a broad reservoir inside a bird sanctuary about 20 km short of Agra, thick with wintering waterfowl: bar-headed geese, pelicans, painted storks, ducks in their thousands. Alongside it are the Wildlife SOS sloth-bear rescue centre (home to former ‘dancing bears’) and the elephant conservation centre. It makes an easy, flat, low-drama weekend — a lake, some conservation you can actually visit, and Fatehpur Sikri or Agra on the return.

Round trip
About 420–480 km
Riding time
3.5–4.5 hours each way
Nights
One night
Start point
Delhi (via the Yamuna Expressway to the Runkata / Keetham exit)
Highest point
Flat Yamuna plains throughout — about 170 m

Easy. Expressway then a short state road; a gentle walk / cycle along the lake bund. Nothing technical.
Surface
Sealed throughout. The Yamuna Expressway is fast and smooth; the Keetham approach and bund roads are narrower with broken edges.
Best season
November to February for the peak of the migratory bird season and comfortable weather. March onwards the birds thin and the heat builds; the lake is least interesting April to September.
Permits

The ride

Delhi → the Yamuna Expressway → the Runkata / Keetham exit, about 20 km before Agra. It is the easiest run in this part of the library — smooth, fast, and short.

At Keetham: the lake bund for the waterfowl (early morning is best), the Wildlife SOS bear and elephant centres (booked slots), and the calm of the sanctuary woodland. On the way back, drop into Fatehpur Sikri (a short detour off the Agra–Bharatpur road) or Agra itself for the return leg.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Keetham

Yamuna Expressway to the Keetham exit (3.5–4.5 hours). Afternoon on the lake bund and a booked Wildlife SOS visit; night near Keetham or in Agra.

  2. Keetham to Delhi via Fatehpur Sikri

A dawn hour on the bund for the birds, then home — via Fatehpur Sikri for a couple of hours if you want a second stop. An easy day.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is plentiful the whole way — the expressway service areas, Mathura, Runkata, Agra. No gap of any kind.
  • Stay near Keetham (a few resorts and homestays) or in Agra, which has every price range. Food is easy. Cards work; carry a little cash for the sanctuary and centre tickets.

Road & conditions

The Yamuna Expressway is fast, smooth and toll-charged for two-wheelers at a modest rate, with the standard expressway hazards — high closing speeds, occasional stray animals at the edges, and fog on winter mornings. Ride it in full daylight. The Keetham approach and bund roads are narrow with broken edges and slow local traffic. The bird-watching is done on foot or by cycle along the bund — leave the bike at the gate.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
Well-equipped hospitals in Agra, 20 km away; the sanctuary and the Wildlife SOS centres have staff on site; birding is on foot along the bund. The Yamuna Expressway fogs on winter mornings — ride it in full daylight.

Best time to ride

November to February is the whole point — the migratory birds are in, the light is soft, and the weather is comfortable for walking the bund. Numbers peak around December–January. By March the migrants are leaving and the heat is rising; April to September the lake is quiet and hot and there is little reason to make the trip.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: binoculars (essential here), a fog-usable clear lens for the winter expressway morning, warm layers for the dawn on the bund, and a little cash. This is one of the gentlest rides in the library.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The Keetham bund, the sanctuary picnic areas and the roadside near the Wildlife SOS gates collect plastic and food waste, which is a direct hazard to waterbirds and to rescued animals. We run a clean-up of the lake bund and the sanctuary picnic area and hand what we collect to the forest-department point, and we support the Wildlife SOS visit as the constructive half of the day.

Ride this with a group

We run Keetham as an easy one-night ride — the expressway to a bird lake near Agra, a booked visit to the bear and elephant rescue, Fatehpur Sikri on the way home, and a lake-bund clean-up as the service action. A gentle, worthwhile weekend.
