Delhi to Deeg Palace
Deeg, in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, has an eighteenth-century summer palace built by the Jat rulers — formal gardens laid out like a Mughal charbagh, pavilions on the water, and an elaborate system of channels and fountains designed to recreate the monsoon. It is small, uncrowded and a very short ride from Delhi, and is best paired with Bharatpur's Keoladeo bird park.

The ride
Delhi → Palwal → Kosi → Deeg, a straightforward run on the highway toward Mathura, then a quieter road west into Rajasthan.
The palace complex of Deeg centres on two large formal gardens with pavilions such as Gopal Bhawan, set beside the water tanks. The fountains, which are run by a system of water pressure rather than pumps, play only on special occasions, so check before you go. The old fort walls of Deeg also remain. Bharatpur is about 35 km away.
Day by day
Delhi to Deeg
Delhi → Palwal → Kosi → Deeg (3.5–4 hours). Visit the palace gardens in the afternoon light.
Deeg and Bharatpur
Walk the palace and fort in the morning, then ride to Bharatpur for Keoladeo or Lohagarh Fort.
Back to Delhi
Back up the Mathura highway. Leave by mid-morning to stay ahead of the return traffic.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy on the highway — Palwal, Kosi, Mathura and Bharatpur have pumps.
- There are few pumps on the last stretch to Deeg; fill up at Kosi.
- Deeg has a few simple hotels; Bharatpur, 35 km away, has more, including heritage stays near the bird park.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Palwal–Kosi highway is busy with trucks and toll plazas; the road west to Deeg is a two-lane road with local traffic and occasional rough patches. In winter, dense fog in the early morning can cut visibility sharply — start after it lifts.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to March is the comfortable window — cool, dry and clear. The fountains at Deeg are run on special days, most often around the monsoon festivals; check ahead if that is what you want to see. Summers are very hot.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: comfortable shoes for the garden paths, a scarf for dust, and a camera for the fountains — the palace is best in the monsoon or its aftermath.
