Delhi to Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar's purpose-built capital, occupied for barely 15 years before being abandoned — reportedly over water shortages — and left remarkably intact as a result. The red sandstone city, the towering Buland Darwaza gateway and the Jama Masjid complex make it one of the best-preserved Mughal-era sites within easy reach of Delhi.

The ride

Delhi → Mathura → Agra → Fatehpur Sikri, a fast highway run that most riders pair with an Agra visit — the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are a short additional ride from the same base, though this route focuses on the quieter, less-crowded Sikri site itself.

Walk through the Jama Masjid complex and the towering Buland Darwaza, built to commemorate a military victory, then the palace quarters — the Panch Mahal, Jodha Bai's Palace and the Diwan-i-Khas — all remarkably complete red sandstone, largely untouched since the city was abandoned.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Fatehpur Sikri and back

Delhi → Mathura → Agra → Fatehpur Sikri (6–7 hours), the palace complex and Jama Masjid, and back the same day — or stay overnight in Agra and add the Taj Mahal the next morning.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is abundant the whole way — this is a major national highway corridor with frequent pumps.
  • Agra has hotels across every budget if you choose to make this an overnight trip paired with the Taj Mahal.

Road & conditions

Excellent sealed highway throughout, one of the fastest and easiest rides in the library. Traffic is heaviest around Mathura and Agra themselves; the highway sections in between move quickly.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on any road-legal commuter.
Fuel gap
None. This route never runs a genuine gap.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the district town, under an hour off on this route; signal is reliable throughout; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to March is comfortable. Summer (April–June) brings severe heat to the whole Agra region — this is one of the hottest parts of the Gangetic plain in peak season, and best avoided for a leisure ride. The monsoon is fine road-wise with occasional heavy rain.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: nothing special. Modest dress is sensible for the mosque complex.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The approach lanes to the Buland Darwaza and the palace complex collect heavy tourist-season litter. We run a clean-up along the busier stretches on our visits.

Ride this with a group

We run Fatehpur Sikri as an easy day trip, often paired with an Agra overnight for riders who want the Taj Mahal on the same run.
