Delhi to Haridwar

Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains — a pilgrim town of ghats, temples and an unforgettable evening aarti at Har ki Pauri. It is the easiest of the holy towns to reach from Delhi, and a good weekend for anyone who has not done it. The single thing to plan around is the Kanwar Yatra, which reshapes the whole highway in July.

The ride

Delhi → Meerut → Roorkee → Haridwar, on a busy national highway. It is a fast, easy run, and you can be at the ghats by lunchtime.

The evening Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri is the moment to be there; arrive early to get a place. Ropeways climb to the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi hilltop temples. The Rajaji foothills start on the edge of town. Rishikesh, 25 km north, makes a natural add-on.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Haridwar

Delhi → Meerut → Roorkee → Haridwar (about 5 hours). Check in and walk to Har ki Pauri for the evening aarti.

  2. The ghats and the ropeways

Take a ropeway to Mansa Devi or Chandi Devi in the morning, then walk the ghats and the bazaar. Add Rishikesh in the afternoon if you like.

  3. Haridwar to Delhi

Back through Roorkee and Meerut. Leave by mid-morning to stay ahead of the return traffic.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — Meerut, Roorkee and Haridwar have plenty of pumps.
  • There is no need for spare fuel. Fill up before you leave Delhi.
  • Haridwar has thousands of stays, from dharamshalas to hotels. Book ahead for full-moon days and festivals, and confirm parking near the ghats.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Meerut–Roorkee highway is fast and busy with trucks and toll plazas. During the Kanwar Yatra (July–August), sections of the Delhi–Meerut–Haridwar route are closed to normal traffic for days — check diversions, or avoid that period. The old town lanes are narrow and crowded, so park and walk.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is the comfortable window — cool, dry and clear. April–June is hot. The Kanwar Yatra period in July–August is the one to avoid on a motorcycle. Big festival days and full-moon nights bring very heavy crowds.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: modest clothing for the ghats, a light layer for evening aarti, and a padlock for your bike and helmet.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The ghats and the river take a heavy load of offerings and plastic. On group rides here, we pick up what we find at our stops and carry it out, and we don't add to the offerings in the water.
