Delhi to Harsil & Gangotri
Harsil is a small army-and-apple village on the Bhagirathi at about 2,600 m, ringed by deodar and snow peaks, and far quieter than the Char Dham crowds that press on to Gangotri, 25 km further up at 3,100 m. Restored recently, the Gartang Gali — a wooden gallery bolted to a cliff on the old Indo-Tibet trade route — is close by.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 960–1,040 km
- Riding days
- 3–4. Two days up (split at Uttarkashi), a day at Harsil, two back
- Nights
- Nights on the road: 3–4
- Start point
- Delhi (via Haridwar and Rishikesh)
- Highest point
- About 3,100 m at Gangotri
- Difficulty
- Challenging. Sealed but landslide-prone Char Dham road, long days, sustained altitude at the top.
- Surface
- Rishikesh–Uttarkashi is Char Dham highway with regular slip damage; Uttarkashi–Harsil–Gangotri is narrower, exposed, and hit by rockfall in places
- Best season
- May to June and mid-September to October, within the Gangotri temple season. Closed by snow in winter; monsoon (Jul–Aug) is dangerous on this road.
The ride
Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh, then up the Bhagirathi through Uttarkashi — the main town of the valley and a sensible overnight — and on past Gangnani and the Sukhi Top switchbacks into the deodar forest around Harsil.
From Harsil, ride up to Gangotri for the shrine and the Bhagirathi's roar, walk to Gartang Gali, and if you are acclimatised and have a permit, the trail continues towards Gaumukh. Down-valley, Dharali and Mukhba are worth a stop.
Day by day
Delhi to Uttarkashi
The long Char Dham day: Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Chamba → Uttarkashi (9–10 hours). Sleep at Uttarkashi, around 1,150 m.
Uttarkashi to Harsil
A shorter, harder ride: Gangnani, Sukhi Top's switchbacks, then the forest to Harsil (4–5 hours). Fuel at Uttarkashi. Arrive with daylight.
Harsil, Gangotri and Gartang Gali
Ride up to Gangotri early before the pilgrim buses, walk to Gartang Gali, and spend the afternoon around Dharali and the apple orchards.
Harsil to Uttarkashi / Rishikesh
Start back down while the road is quiet. Overnight at Uttarkashi or push to Rishikesh.
Back to Delhi
The final highway leg. Leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Rishikesh and up to Uttarkashi.
- Uttarkashi is the last reliable pump. Harsil and Gangotri have no petrol pump — fill completely at Uttarkashi and carry a 3–5 litre spare for the top of the valley.
- Harsil has GMVN, army-run and private guesthouses; Gangotri has basic dharamshalas and lodges. Book ahead in season. Signal is weak beyond Uttarkashi.
Road & conditions
The Rishikesh–Uttarkashi road is a busy Char Dham route with frequent roadwork and a bad monsoon landslide record. Above Uttarkashi the road narrows, hugs the cliff, and takes rockfall around Gangnani and on the Sukhi climb. Ride it in daylight, do not stop under overhangs, and check for closures at Uttarkashi before heading up.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Easier with more torque and travel — a 250cc-plus or a small ADV. A confident rider can do it on a commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospital at Uttarkashi; Army medical near Harsil; the Gangotri highway is a working construction zone with blasting halts; signal is patchy past Uttarkashi.
Permits & local rules
No permit is needed to ride to Harsil or Gangotri. A forest permit (arranged at Gangotri) is required only if you continue on foot beyond Gangotri towards Gaumukh and Tapovan.
Best time to ride
Late May to June and mid-September to October, within the Gangotri temple season set each year. The road closes for winter; avoid the monsoon.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: warm and windproof layers (Gangotri is near-freezing at night even in summer), a fuel spare, tools and a puncture kit, cash, and something for altitude headache. Carry ID and vehicle papers — there are checkposts.
Ride this with a group
We run Harsil as a four-day group ride — the Char Dham road paced and ridden in daylight, fuel carried from Uttarkashi, and a riverbank clean-up at Gangotri.
