Delhi to Panwali Kantha
Panwali Kantha is a wide alpine meadow at around 3,600 m on the historic foot-traverse between Ghuttu (near Budha Kedar) and Triyuginarayan (near Kedarnath) — a line pilgrims once walked between the shrines. Today it is a quiet ride-and-trek: bikes up the Tehri lake and Bhilangana valley roads to Ghuttu, then a two-to-three day walk through oak and rhododendron to the meadow, camping under a skyline that runs from the Gangotri group to the Kedarnath dome. Few people, no road, real height.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 950–1,050 km
- Riding time
- 2 days to Ghuttu each way; then trek days
- Nights
- 5–6 nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rishikesh, Tehri and the Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu)
- Highest point
- About 3,650 m at Panwali Kantha meadow
- Difficulty
- Challenging. Char Dham highway then Tehri-lake and Bhilangana valley roads to Ghuttu; the meadow itself is a multi-day trek with a high camp.
- Surface
- Sealed to Ghuttu, with rough, slide-repaired sections in the Bhilangana valley. Beyond Ghuttu it is a trekking path — not motorable.
- Best season
- Mid-May to June and mid-September to mid-October, between snowmelt and the first snow. The monsoon makes the Bhilangana road and the meadow trail slick, leech-ridden and slide-prone.
The ride
Delhi → Rishikesh → Chamba → along the Tehri lake and up the Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu, past Budha Kedar. Two riding days, the second slow and scenic on the lake and valley roads.
From Ghuttu, park the bikes, and trek: Ghuttu → Kot / Kharsoli → a forest camp → Panwali Kantha meadow (high camp) → and, if the group is strong, on toward Triyuginarayan to close the traverse (with a vehicle shuttle back for the bikes) or simply retrace to Ghuttu. Local guide and porters throughout.
Day by day
Delhi to Tehri / Chamba
Rishikesh and the climb to Chamba above the Tehri lake (9–10 hours). Night here.
Tehri to Ghuttu
The lake road and the Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu via Budha Kedar (4–5 hours, rough in places). Night at Ghuttu; organise guide and porters, secure the bikes.
Trek: Ghuttu to a forest camp
Climb through terraced fields and oak forest to the first high camp.
Trek: to Panwali Kantha
Up through rhododendron to the meadow and the high camp at ~3,600 m — the big-skyline day.
Panwali Kantha / toward Triyuginarayan
A meadow morning, then either descend toward Triyuginarayan to complete the traverse or begin retracing to Ghuttu.
Trek out / ride to Rishikesh
Back to the bikes at Ghuttu and start the ride down.
To Delhi
The final riding day home.
Fuel & services
- Fill up at Rishikesh and again at Chamba or New Tehri.
- From New Tehri up the Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu and back has no reliable fuel — roughly 100–120 km of rough hill riding. Fill at Chamba/New Tehri and carry 3–5 litres of spare per bike.
- Ghuttu has basic guesthouses and GMVN; on the trek there are only forest camps and a PWD/GMVN hut at Panwali. Everything above Ghuttu is carried and cash-only. Last dependable ATM is Chamba / New Tehri.
Road & conditions
Char Dham highway to Chamba is sound but busy. The Tehri lake road is scenic and mostly good; the Bhilangana valley road to Ghuttu is narrower, rougher and slide-repaired, with drop-offs and little traffic — ride it slowly. Beyond Ghuttu there is no road; the bikes stay put. On the trek, the meadow is exposed to weather and lightning — be off the tops by early afternoon and camp at the tree line if a storm builds.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Easier with more torque and travel — a 250cc-plus or a small ADV. A confident rider can do it on a commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals at New Tehri and (basic) Ghuttu; above Ghuttu there is no road, no signal and no vehicle evacuation from the Panwali meadow — a rescue is a stretcher carry back to Ghuttu. Riders must be trek-fit and acclimatised and carry a satellite messenger.
Best time to ride
Mid-May to June for green meadow and rhododendron, and mid-September to mid-October for clear post-monsoon skies and firm ground. Snow lingers on the meadow into May and returns by late October. The monsoon is the worst time — the Bhilangana road slips, the forest trail is a leech field, and the meadow is fog and lightning.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: full trekking kit and a sub-zero sleeping bag for the high camp, poles, altitude medication and a proper first-aid kit, a satellite messenger, water treatment, 3–5 litres of spare fuel per bike, cash for the whole trip, and a local guide and porters.
Ride this with a group
We run Panwali Kantha as a 6–7 day ride-and-trek — two riding days up the Tehri lake and Bhilangana valley to Ghuttu, then a high-camp trek to a meadow on the old pilgrim line between Kedar and Gangotri, with a meadow clean-up as the service action.
