Delhi to Jawai & Bera
Between Pali and Sirohi, the plains break into a field of rounded granite hills — and among the caves and boulders lives one of the densest leopard populations in India, alongside Rabari shepherds, their flocks, and hilltop shrines the leopards seem to tolerate. The Jawai dam below holds marsh crocodiles and, in winter, flamingos and pelicans. It is a strange, quiet, entirely offbeat wildlife country.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,400–1,500 km
- Riding time
- Two days each way (split at Ajmer or Pali), with a full day for the safari drives
- Nights
- Nights on the road: 4
- Start point
- Delhi (via Jaipur, Ajmer and Pali)
- Highest point
- Low granite country — around 300 m; the kopjes rise a few hundred metres above the plain
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Fast highway then good state roads; the interest is the leopards, the rocks and the dam, not the riding.
- Surface
- Good four-lane to Pali via Jaipur and Ajmer, then sound state roads to Jawai/Bera and the dam; the safari tracks are rough
- Best season
- October to March. Winter is best — comfortable, and the flamingos are on the dam; leopard sightings are good year-round on the rocks, but the pre-monsoon heat of April–June is punishing.
The ride
Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer → Pali → Jawai Bandh / Bera. Fast highway to Pali, then into the granite country.
Safaris are by open jeep with a local tracker, booked through a camp or homestay — the leopards are watched from the vehicle at a respectful distance, often at dawn and dusk on the rock faces. Add a boat or shore visit to the Jawai dam for crocodiles and winter birds, and the Rabari hamlets and hilltop Devji shrines. Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh are close on the way back.
The loop
- Ride Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer → Pali → Jawai/Bera and check in at a camp or homestay that runs leopard safaris.
- Book safaris with the stay — an open jeep and a tracker; the leopards are viewed from the vehicle on the rocks, not approached on foot.
- Do a dawn and a dusk safari, and a separate visit to the Jawai dam for crocodiles and (in winter) flamingos and pelicans.
- Add Ranakpur's marble Jain temple or Kumbhalgarh's wall on the way back toward Delhi.
- On the bike, keep to the roads — the granite hills are leopard habitat and shepherd land, and the safari tracks are the operators', not ours.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the Jaipur–Ajmer highway, Pali, Sumerpur and the Jawai road are all well served.
- No real gap; top up at Sumerpur or Jawai Bandh before the camp and the dam roads.
- Stay is a range of camps and homestays around Jawai and Bera, from simple to expensive — book the one that runs its own safaris. Carry cash for tips and entry fees. Winter nights are cold on the rocks.
Road & conditions
Fast and easy to Pali — four-lane via Jaipur and Ajmer. Pali to Jawai and Bera is a sound state road; the roads around the granite hills and the dam are quiet two-lane, and the safari tracks (which you take in the operator's jeep, not on the bike) are rough. Watch for Jaipur and Ajmer city traffic, highway trucks, and livestock — and leopards do cross the quiet roads at night, so do not ride them after dark.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospital at Pali and Sumerpur; good signal; leopards cross the quiet roads at night — do not ride them after dark.
Best time to ride
October to March. Winter is the most comfortable and brings flamingos to the Jawai dam; leopard sightings on the rocks are reliable through the cool months. April to June is punishingly hot. The monsoon greens the granite country but the tracks get sticky.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: warm layers for a cold dawn safari on the rocks, binoculars, a camera with reach, neutral clothing, sun cover for the day, and cash. Basic tools and a puncture kit for the state roads.
Ride this with a group
We run Jawai and Bera as a four-night ride into leopard-and-granite country — dawn and dusk safaris in the operators' jeeps, a dam visit for crocodiles and flamingos, Ranakpur on the way home, and a dam-shore and roadside clean-up as the service action.
