Delhi to Tal Chhapar & Churu
Tal Chhapar, in the Churu district, is a flat saline grassland sanctuary — a rare patch of open savanna in the Thar's fringe, thick with blackbuck, and a winter magnet for harriers, eagles and other raptors. Nearby, Churu town is an ‘open-air gallery’ of frescoed havelis — the Kanhaiya Lal Bagla and Surana havelis, and the six-storey Malji ka Kamra — grander and far less visited than Mandawa's.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 650–750 km
- Riding time
- 6–7 hours each way on highway and state roads, plus safari drives
- Nights
- Two nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rewari, Narnaul and Sikar)
- Highest point
- Flat Thar-fringe plain — around 300 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Flat, fast, non-technical riding; the interest is the grassland and the havelis.
- Surface
- Good four-lane / state highway via Rewari and Sikar to Churu, then a short state road to the sanctuary
- Best season
- October to March. Winter is the raptor season and the best light on the grass; the sanctuary greens up briefly after the monsoon; April–June is fiercely hot and open.
The ride
Delhi → Rewari → Narnaul → Sikar → Churu, then the short run to Tal Chhapar. Flat, fast Shekhawati riding.
At the sanctuary, drive the grassland tracks (with the forest gate's permission and, ideally, a naturalist) for blackbuck, desert fox, and the winter raptor roosts; the water body and the salt pan draw the birds. In Churu, walk the haveli lanes — Bagla, Surana, the Malji ka Kamra — and the town's step-wells. Ramgarh Shekhawati, the most painted town of all, is 20 km on.
The loop
- Ride Delhi → Rewari → Sikar → Churu → Tal Chhapar and check in at the forest rest house (book ahead with the Rajasthan forest department) or a hotel in Churu.
- Arrange grassland drives at the sanctuary gate — a permitted vehicle and a guide are the norm; private motorcycles are not taken onto the grassland tracks.
- Do a dawn and a dusk drive for blackbuck and raptors, then spend a half-day walking the Churu haveli lanes and step-wells.
- Add Ramgarh Shekhawati (the 'Golden City' of frescoes) or Fatehpur on the way back.
- On the bike, stick to the public roads — the grassland is for the guided drives, and blackbuck bolt across the approach roads at dawn and dusk.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the Rewari–Sikar highway, Sikar, Churu and Sujangarh are all well served.
- No real gap; top up at Churu before the sanctuary and the Ramgarh loop.
- Stay is the forest rest house at Tal Chhapar (limited, book ahead), heritage havelis in Churu and Ramgarh, or hotels in Sujangarh. Carry cash for the forest fees and the smaller places.
Road & conditions
Flat and easy. The Rewari–Narnaul–Sikar corridor and the Sikar–Churu road are good two- to four-lane roads with the usual plains traffic, unmarked breakers and slow village stretches. The sanctuary approach and the Ramgarh road are quiet state roads. The main hazards are winter-morning fog, livestock, and blackbuck crossing near the sanctuary — ride the early legs in daylight.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospital at Churu and Sujangarh; good signal; blackbuck bolt across the sanctuary approach roads at dawn and dusk.
Best time to ride
October to March. December to February is the raptor peak and the best low light on the grass. The grassland greens briefly after the monsoon. April to June is fiercely hot with no shade — avoid it.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: warm layers for a cold dawn drive, binoculars, a camera with reach, sun cover and water for the open grass, neutral clothing, and cash. Basic tools and a puncture kit for the state roads.
Ride this with a group
We run Tal Chhapar and Churu as a two-night ride pairing a blackbuck grassland with a town of frescoes — dawn and dusk drives on permitted vehicles, a half-day in the haveli lanes, and a sanctuary-boundary and haveli-lane clean-up as the service action.
