Delhi to Jhalana Leopard Reserve, Jaipur

Jhalana Leopard Reserve is a patch of dry deciduous forest on the edge of Jaipur, home to a healthy population of leopards that are regularly seen on jeep safaris — with the city skyline sometimes visible beyond the trees. It is one of the more reliable places in India to see a wild leopard, and it is a highway ride from Delhi.

The ride

Delhi → Gurugram → Behror → Jaipur → Jhalana, on the same highway as the Jaipur route. The reserve's entrance is on Jaipur's southeastern edge.

Safaris run in the morning and evening by forest-department jeep; book in advance, because slots are limited and sell out at weekends. Leopards are seen most days but never guaranteed. Combine it with Amber and the old city if you want a fuller Jaipur weekend.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Jaipur

Delhi → Gurugram → Behror → Jaipur (5–6 hours). Settle in, and if you have an evening safari booked, go straight to the reserve.

  2. Jhalana safari

Take the morning jeep safari, then the rest of the day for Amber or the city.

  3. Jaipur to Delhi

Back on the Delhi highway. Leave by mid-morning to avoid the Sunday-evening rush.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy on the whole highway — there are pumps every few kilometres.
  • Fill up on Jaipur's outskirts before you ride into the city.
  • Jaipur has every kind of stay from budget lodges to heritage havelis. Book ahead in winter, and confirm parking.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Jaipur highway is a busy four-lane corridor with tolls and heavy truck traffic. Jaipur city traffic is dense, so plan your safari timing around it. Safaris are by jeep only — you cannot ride your bike into the reserve.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is comfortable for the ride and for the safari. April–June is very hot, but leopards are often easier to see then. The monsoon greens the forest and the reserve can close for a period; check before booking.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for open-jeep dawn safaris, a scarf for dust, and a small camera or binoculars.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Reserves on city edges attract litter and plastic from surrounding areas. On group rides here, we follow the reserve's rules, keep quiet during the safari, and pick up what we find at our stops.
