Delhi to Simbalbara National Park & Paonta Sahib
Simbalbara is a small national park in the Shivalik foothills of Sirmaur, on the Himachal–Uttarakhand border — sal and bamboo forest with chital, sambar, wild boar and, more rarely, leopards, next to the Rajaji landscape. It is quiet, cheap, uncrowded and on a good highway, with the historic Paonta Sahib gurdwara on the Yamuna a short ride away.

The ride
Delhi → Panipat → Yamunanagar → Paonta Sahib → Simbalbara, mostly on national highway, with the last leg on a two-lane road through farmland and forest edge. It is a straightforward run.
The park is best seen on a forest-department jeep safari, so book ahead and check the current rules. In Paonta Sahib, the gurdwara on the Yamuna is associated with Guru Gobind Singh, who spent several years here. Dress modestly, and cover your head.
Day by day
Delhi to Paonta Sahib
Delhi → Panipat → Yamunanagar → Paonta Sahib (5–6 hours). Visit the gurdwara and settle in.
Simbalbara
Ride to Simbalbara early for the safari, then have a slow lunch and spend the afternoon by the Yamuna.
Back to Delhi
Back down through Yamunanagar and Panipat. Leave by early afternoon.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy on the highway — Panipat, Karnal, Yamunanagar and Paonta Sahib all have pumps.
- Fill up at Paonta Sahib before the park; there are no pumps on the forest road.
- Paonta Sahib has simple hotels and a gurdwara guesthouse. Book ahead in the winter months.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Panipat–Karnal–Yamunanagar highway is fast with truck traffic and tolls; the last stretch to Paonta Sahib and the park is a two-lane road. In winter, dense fog on the highway in the early morning can cut visibility sharply — start after it lifts. The safari tracks inside the park are for jeeps only.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
November to June is the working window. Winter is cool and clear, with fog on the plains in the early morning. Summers are hot, but animals are easier to see at waterholes. The park may close in the monsoon.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for early jeep safaris, closed shoes, and a gurdwara-appropriate head covering for Paonta Sahib.
