Delhi to Jodhpur & Mehrangarh Fort
Jodhpur's old town gives it the nickname Blue City — indigo-washed houses packed below Mehrangarh Fort, which rises on a sandstone ridge about 120 m above the plain and counts among the largest, best-preserved forts in India. It is a full desert-city destination in its own right, distinct from the smaller towns elsewhere in this library's Rajasthan routes.

- Nights
- Two nights is comfortable for the fort, the old city and a proper look at the blue lanes

- Delhi (via Jaipur and Ajmer)

- October to March. Summer here is genuinely severe desert heat; even winter days can be warm, but nights are pleasantly cool.
The ride
Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer → Jodhpur, a long but straightforward highway run best split with an overnight at Jaipur. The distance means this is treated as a proper outstation trip rather than a weekend dash.
Mehrangarh Fort dominates everything — walk the ramparts for the view over the blue old town, and take in the museum's weapons and palanquin collections. Below the fort, the old city's blue lanes reward slow walking, and Jaswant Thada, a marble cenotaph a short ride from the fort, is a peaceful add-on.
Day by day
Delhi to Jaipur
Delhi → Jaipur (5–6 hours). An easier first day; settle in.
Jaipur to Jodhpur
Jaipur → Ajmer → Jodhpur (5–6 hours). Settle into the old city.
Mehrangarh Fort and the blue lanes
A full day at the fort and museum, then walking the old town's blue lanes and Jaswant Thada.
Jodhpur to Delhi
Retrace via Ajmer and Jaipur, splitting the return as on the way out.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is abundant the whole way — this is a major national highway corridor with frequent pumps.
- Jodhpur has hotels across every budget, including heritage havelis inside the old city walls.
Road & conditions
Excellent sealed highway throughout, one of the best-maintained long routes in the library. This is also a heavily used corridor, so expect steady truck and bus traffic, particularly around Jaipur and Ajmer.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the district town, one to two hours off; signal is reliable throughout; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to March is the only comfortable window — Jodhpur's summer (April–June) brings genuinely severe desert heat, regularly well above 40°C. Winter days are warm and pleasant; nights are cool enough for a light jacket.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun protection and extra water regardless of season, given how exposed and hot this region gets even outside peak summer.
Ride this with a group
We run Jodhpur as a two-night outstation trip, split at Jaipur each way given the distance, with a full day set aside for the fort alone.
