Delhi to Kalinjar Fort
Kalinjar, in the Banda district on the northern rim of the Vindhyas, is one of the great hill forts of central India — held by the Chandelas, besieged by Mahmud of Ghazni, Sher Shah Suri (who died here) and the Mughals. It is vast and half-wild: rock-cut sculpture on the climb and the seven gates, the Neelkanth temple built into a cliff hollow with a giant linga, and huge rain-fed tanks. Almost nobody comes.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,350–1,450 km
- Riding time
- Two days each way (split at Jhansi or Mahoba), with a full day at the fort
- Nights
- Three nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Yamuna Expressway, Agra, Gwalior and Jhansi)
- Highest point
- Vindhyan scarp — the fort sits about 240 m above the plain, near 375 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Fast highway then rougher Bundelkhand state roads; a short steep fort road and a lot of walking on rock.
- Surface
- Expressway and NH-44 to Jhansi, then Bundelkhand state roads via Mahoba to Kalinjar — decent but patchy, with rough stretches
- Best season
- October to March for the open fort and the walking. April to June is brutally hot with no shade on the rock; the monsoon fills the tanks and greens the scarp but the rock gets slick.
The ride
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi → Mahoba → Kalinjar. Fast to Jhansi, then deeper Bundelkhand roads — Mahoba's Chandela lakes and the Rahila Sagar sun temple make a good stop.
At the fort: the climb through the seven gates, the rock-cut carvings and the Sita Sej and Patal Ganga, the Neelkanth temple in its cliff hollow, the Koti Tirth and Budha-Budhi tanks, and the ruined palaces on top. Give it most of a day on foot. Ajaigarh fort, near Panna, is the natural pairing if you have another day.
Day by day
Delhi to Jhansi
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi (7–8 hours). Overnight Jhansi or Gwalior.
Jhansi to Kalinjar
Jhansi → Mahoba (the Chandela lakes) → Kalinjar (3–4 hours). Settle near the fort (a UP Tourism property) or at Banda.
Kalinjar Fort
The seven gates, the rock-cut sculpture, the Neelkanth cliff temple and the tanks. A full day on the rock.
Kalinjar to Delhi
Retrace via Mahoba, Jhansi, Gwalior and the expressway. Leave early — it's a long two days back.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Jhansi and Mahoba; there are pumps at Banda and near Kalinjar village.
- Fill up at Mahoba or Banda before the last run to Kalinjar — the fort village has only a small pump.
- Kalinjar has a UP Tourism (Nilkanth) guesthouse and basic rooms; Banda and Mahoba have simple hotels. Carry cash. Bring your own food and plenty of water for the fort day.
Road & conditions
Fast and easy to Jhansi on the expressway and NH-44. From Jhansi through Mahoba to Kalinjar the Bundelkhand state roads are decent but patchy, with rough stretches, unmarked breakers and village bottlenecks. The fort road is a short steep climb; the fort itself is explored on foot over rock. Watch for highway trucks, the poorer surfaces east of Jhansi, and livestock. Ride the legs in daylight.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.
Best time to ride
October to March for the open fort and a full day of walking on bare rock. April to June is brutally hot with no shade. The monsoon fills the tanks and greens the scarp but the rock steps and the Neelkanth approach get slippery.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun cover and plenty of water for the shadeless fort, sturdy shoes for a day on rock, a torch for the cliff temple and passages, basic tools and a puncture kit for the rougher roads, and cash. Bring your own food for the fort.
Ride this with a group
We run Kalinjar as a three-night ride into deep Bundelkhand — Mahoba's Chandela lakes on the way, a full day on a colossal hill fort, and a gate-climb and tank-edge clean-up as the service action.
