Delhi to the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary

The Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary — officially the Chandrashekhar Azad sanctuary — is a shallow oxbow lake on the Lucknow–Kanpur road in Unnao district, ringed by a walking path, watchtowers and a small deer enclosure. Through winter it fills with migratory waterfowl — greylag and bar-headed geese, pintail, shoveler, teal, storks — and on a weekday you may have the bund to yourself. It is a long, flat, easy weekend for people who like birds and quiet, reached almost entirely by expressway.

The ride

Delhi → the Yamuna Expressway to Agra → the Agra–Lucknow Expressway → the Nawabganj exit on the Lucknow–Kanpur road. It is long but almost all fast, straight expressway — a transit ride with a wildlife payoff.

At the sanctuary: the bund walk around the lake, the watchtowers, the small deer enclosure and the interpretation centre. Early morning and late afternoon are the birding hours. Lucknow — the Residency, the Bara Imambara, the old city's food — is 45 km away and makes an obvious second night.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Lucknow / Nawabganj

The two expressways east to the Nawabganj area (8–10 hours). Night near the sanctuary or in Lucknow.

  2. Nawabganj birding + Lucknow

A dawn and a dusk on the sanctuary bund, and the middle of the day in Lucknow — the Residency, the Imambaras, the food. Second night in Lucknow.

  3. Lucknow to Delhi

The long expressway run home — start early, plan fatigue stops, aim to be off the road before dark.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is plentiful — the expressway service areas, Agra, Lucknow. Both expressways have fuel stops at intervals.
  • The sanctuary and Lucknow are close together with pumps every few km; no gap and no spare needed. Carry cash for the sanctuary ticket and the old-city food.
  • Stay at the on-site tourist complex (basic) or, better, in Lucknow, which has every price range and much better food. The sanctuary itself has no proper accommodation.

Road & conditions

The Yamuna and Agra–Lucknow expressways are fast, smooth and straight — the hazards are fatigue on a 500 km day, high closing speeds, occasional stray animals and wrong-way riders near the ramps, and winter fog. Ride in full daylight, take proper breaks, and do not push a tired group into the evening. The last state-road stretch to the sanctuary is ordinary two-lane; the birding bund is a flat walk.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospital at Unnao and full hospitals in Lucknow and Kanpur; the sanctuary has a basic tourist complex and staff. The risk on this ride is fatigue and winter fog on a 500 km expressway day, not the wildlife — ride in daylight and take proper breaks.

Best time to ride

November to February, with December and January the peak for migratory numbers. The riding is cool and the fog is the main watch-out. By March the migrants are leaving and the plains heat is building; April to October the lake holds little and the ride is hot or, in the monsoon, waterlogged — there is no reason to go then.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: binoculars (essential), a fog-usable clear lens, warm layers for cold expressway dawns and the bund, and cash. The ride is easy; the distance and the fog are the only real considerations.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The sanctuary bund, the picnic area and the tourist-complex surrounds collect plastic and food waste that is a direct hazard to the waterbirds, and the approach road is strewn. We run a clean-up of the bund and the picnic area and hand what we collect to the forest-department point.

Ride this with a group

We run Nawabganj as a two-night birding ride — two expressways east to a wintering-bird lake near Lucknow, dawn and dusk on the bund, a day in the old city, and a lakeside clean-up as the service action.
