Delhi to Mahoba
Mahoba was a Chandela capital, and its rulers left a ring of great reservoirs — Rahila Sagar with its ruined sun temple, Madan Sagar with a submerged temple, Vijay Sagar and Kirat Sagar — set among low granite hills studded with rock-cut Jain figures at Gokhar. It is the heartland of the Alha-Udal ballad, still sung here. Dry, hard, historic Bundelkhand country that sees almost no visitors — a rewarding outstation ride for people who like ruins with room to breathe.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,250–1,350 km
- Riding time
- 2.5 days each way
- Nights
- 2 nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Agra, Gwalior and Jhansi, or via Kanpur and Hamirpur)
- Highest point
- Low granite-and-scrub Bundelkhand plateau — about 200 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Long highway riding, then two-lane Bundelkhand roads with rough sections; the sites are ridden between and walked.
- Surface
- Sealed throughout; the Jhansi–Mahoba and Mahoba–Khajuraho roads are two-lane with broken edges and long empty stretches.
- Best season
- October to March. Winter is dry and cool and the lakes and hills are pleasant; April to June is severe Bundelkhand heat with no shade; the monsoon fills the lakes and greens the scrub but leaves the roads patchy.
The ride
Delhi → Agra → Gwalior → Jhansi → Mahoba, or the flatter line via Kanpur and Hamirpur. Two-and-a-half riding days; base in Mahoba or nearby Khajuraho.
Ride between the lakes — Rahila Sagar's sun temple, Madan Sagar, Vijay Sagar's bird life — and out to Gokhar hill for the rock-cut Jain figures and the town view. Kalinjar fort is 60 km east and Khajuraho 60 km south-west, so Mahoba slots naturally into a bigger Bundelkhand loop.
Day by day
Delhi to Gwalior / Jhansi
The highway corridor via Agra to Gwalior or Jhansi (8–10 hours). Night here.
To Mahoba
On to Mahoba (2–3 hours), then the lakes, the sun temple and Gokhar hill through the afternoon. Night in Mahoba or Khajuraho.
Mahoba / Kalinjar + return leg
The remaining lakes, or a ride out to Kalinjar fort, then start the ride home — night at Gwalior / Jhansi.
To Delhi
The final highway run home.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is fine on the highway corridor — Agra, Gwalior, Jhansi.
- The Jhansi–Mahoba–Khajuraho roads run through thin country with 50–80 km gaps between reliable pumps. Fill at Jhansi and at Mahoba town and carry 3–5 litres of spare for the group.
- Mahoba has only basic hotels; Khajuraho, an hour away, has the full range and better food, and makes a comfortable base. Carry cash; card acceptance and ATMs are limited outside Khajuraho and Jhansi.
Road & conditions
The highway corridor is fast four-lane in stretches with the usual truck and fatigue hazards over 700+ km days. The Bundelkhand two-lane roads are patchy — broken edges, unmarked humps, blowing grit, slow tractor and bullock traffic, and long empty stretches. Ride in daylight; the region is dry and thinly policed, and villages have loose cattle and dogs on the road.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.
Best time to ride
October to March, with December to February the most comfortable — dry, cool, the lakes still holding post-monsoon water and the granite hills pleasant to climb. April to June is brutal, shadeless Bundelkhand heat. The monsoon fills the reservoirs and greens the scrub but the roads deteriorate and the heat stays humid.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun cover and plenty of water for the shadeless sites, a dust buff, layers for cold mornings, spare fuel for the group, and cash. Nothing technical — the challenge is distance and heat.
Ride this with a group
We run Mahoba as a 3-day outstation ride — the central corridor to a thousand-year-old lake town in Bundelkhand, a sun temple, rock-cut Jain giants, the Alha-Udal hills, and a temple-precinct clean-up as the service action.
