Delhi to Todgarh-Raoli & Goram Ghat

The Todgarh-Raoli Wildlife Sanctuary, in the southern Aravallis between Ajmer, Pali and Rajsamand, is a surprising pocket of dense hill forest, seasonal waterfalls, leopard and sloth-bear country, and the headwaters of the Banas and Bheem rivers. On its edge, Goram Ghat near Kamli Ghat is a dramatic escarpment climb — a switchbacking road beside a metre-gauge mountain railway that still hauls itself up the cliffs through tunnels and over curved bridges. It is a moderate outstation ride into hills most people don't know Rajasthan has.

At a glance

Round trip
About 1,100–1,200 km
Riding time
2.5 days each way
Nights
2 nights
Start point
Delhi (via Jaipur, Ajmer and Beawar)
Highest point
About 900 m in the Todgarh hills; the Goram Ghat road climbs and drops the escarpment
Difficulty
Moderate. Highway to Beawar, then narrow, twisting Aravalli hill roads and the steep switchbacks of Goram Ghat.
Surface
Sealed throughout; the Todgarh and Goram Ghat roads are single-lane hill tar with broken sections, gravel on the bends and blind corners.
Best season
October to March. Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) the waterfalls still run and the hills are green; winter is cool and clear; April to June is hot; the monsoon greens everything but slicks the ghat and can flood the crossings.
Permits
Todgarh-Raoli is a wildlife sanctuary — stay on the through roads, do not ride into restricted forest tracks, and ask locally about any permit needed for the interior. Riding the ghat roads at night is not advised.

The ride

Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer → Beawar over two-and-a-half days, then the hill road climbs into the sanctuary at Todgarh. Base at Todgarh or a Kumbhalgarh-side property.

Ride the forest roads to the Dudhaleshwar and Bhil Berach waterfalls and viewpoints, then the star of the trip: the Goram Ghat switchbacks near Kamli Ghat, timed if you can for a train crawling the escarpment. Kumbhalgarh fort and its own wildlife sanctuary are a short ride south for a bigger loop.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Beawar / Todgarh

Highway via Jaipur and Ajmer to Beawar, then up into the hills to Todgarh (10–12 hours over two days; night at Jaipur or Ajmer). Night at Todgarh.

  2. Sanctuary + Goram Ghat

Forest roads and waterfalls in the morning, the Goram Ghat switchbacks and the railway in the afternoon light. Second night at Todgarh or Kumbhalgarh.

  3. Return to Delhi

Down out of the hills and the two-day highway run home — start early to clear the hill roads in daylight.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is fine to Beawar on the highway — Jaipur, Ajmer, Beawar.
  • The Todgarh and Goram Ghat hill roads have no reliable fuel — the loop through the sanctuary and the ghat can be 80–120 km. Fill at Beawar and carry 3–5 litres of spare for the group.
  • Todgarh has basic guesthouses and a Forest rest house; there are better resorts on the Kumbhalgarh side. Food is simple. Carry cash; the last dependable ATM is Beawar.

Road & conditions

Highway to Beawar is fast four-lane with the usual truck and fatigue hazards. The Todgarh and Goram Ghat roads are single-lane hill tar — broken sections, gravel on the bends, blind corners, and, on the ghat, tight steep switchbacks with drop-offs and the odd bus. Ride them slowly and in daylight. This is genuine leopard and sloth-bear country: do not ride the forest roads after dark, and give any animal on the road plenty of room.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.

Best time to ride

October to March. October and November are special — the monsoon waterfalls are still flowing and the Aravalli forest is green — and December to February is cool and clear. April to June is hot and the falls are dry. The monsoon makes the ghat greasy and can flood the river crossings, but the hills are at their most dramatic; ride it only with local advice on the road position.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: layers for a cold hill morning, grippy tyres and good brakes for the switchbacks, spare fuel for the group, sun cover, and cash. Ride the ghat within your limits — there is no shame in walking a hairpin.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The waterfall pools, the Goram Ghat viewpoints and the railway laybys collect heavy picnic litter at the weekend, and plastic in a wildlife sanctuary reaches its animals. We run a clean-up of one waterfall pool and the main Goram Ghat viewpoint and carry what we collect out to Todgarh or Kamli Ghat.

Ride this with a group

We run Todgarh and Goram Ghat as a 3-day outstation ride — highway to Beawar, then Aravalli hill forest, waterfalls, and a switchbacking ghat beside a cliff-climbing railway, with a waterfall-pool clean-up as the service action. Rajasthan's hidden hills.
