Delhi to the Morena Temple Cluster
In the Chambal country of Morena district, a handful of extraordinary and near-empty sites sit within an hour of each other: the circular Chausath Yogini temple at Mitaoli (Ekattarso Mahadeva, often cited as an inspiration for the round Parliament House); the fortified Padavali Shiva temple on its bastion; the ASI-rebuilt Bateshwar group of about 200 8th–10th-century sandstone temples; and the towering Kakanmath at Sihoniya. Kuno National Park, India's cheetah-reintroduction site, is a longer add-on.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 950–1,050 km (more if you add Kuno)
- Riding time
- 6–7 hours each way to Morena on the expressway and highway; then short hops between sites
- Nights
- Three nights (Gwalior or Morena as a base; add one for Kuno)
- Start point
- Delhi (via Yamuna Expressway, Agra and Dholpur)
- Highest point
- Chambal plateau country — around 200 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Fast highway approach; the site link roads are narrow rural roads, a few of them rough.
- Surface
- Yamuna Expressway and NH-44 to Morena; the link roads to Mitaoli, Padavali, Bateshwar and Sihoniya are narrow, partly broken rural roads
- Best season
- October to March. Winter is comfortable for the open sites and the Chambal; April to June is very hot with no shade; the monsoon makes the rural link roads muddy. Kuno safaris run roughly October to June.
The ride
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Dholpur → Morena (or base at Gwalior, 40 km on, for the hotels and the fort). Fast highway all the way.
The Mitaoli–Padavali–Bateshwar trio sits close together off the Morena–Sihoniya road and can be done in a half-day; Kakanmath at Sihoniya is a short ride on. Gwalior's fort, Teli-ka-Mandir and Sas-Bahu temples make an obvious extra day. For Kuno, it is a further three to four hours west to Sheopur and the Ahera gate, with safaris booked through the MP forest portal.
Day by day
Delhi to Gwalior / Morena
Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → Agra → Dholpur → Gwalior or Morena (6–7 hours). Settle; evening at Gwalior fort if based there.
The Morena temple trio
Mitaoli's Chausath Yogini circle, the fortified Padavali temple, and the ASI Bateshwar group — a slow half-day — then Kakanmath at Sihoniya. Overnight Morena or Gwalior.
Gwalior, or ride to Kuno
Either a Gwalior day (fort, temples, the old town) or the ride west to Sheopur for a Kuno safari (book ahead). Overnight accordingly.
Back to Delhi
Retrace via Agra and the expressway. Leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Morena and Gwalior on the highway.
- Fill up at Morena before the Mitaoli–Padavali–Sihoniya loop — the rural link roads have only occasional small pumps. If you add Kuno, fill again at Sheopur.
- Base at Gwalior for the widest hotel choice, or simpler hotels at Morena. Kuno has MP forest and private options near Sheopur, booked with the safari. Carry cash for site areas and the rural stretches.
Road & conditions
Fast and easy to Morena on the expressway and NH-44. The site link roads — Morena to Mitaoli, Padavali, Bateshwar and Sihoniya — are narrow rural roads, some smooth, some broken and dusty, through farmland and small villages. The Kuno road west is a decent state highway. Ride the rural loops in daylight, watch for livestock and tractors, and keep the group together in the Chambal country.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals in the route towns; generally good signal; long gaps between towns on the rural link roads — carry a puncture kit and water.
Best time to ride
October to March for comfortable riding and walking the open, shadeless sites, with the Chambal at its best in the cool months. April to June is brutally hot. The monsoon makes the rural link roads muddy and slow. Kuno's safari season runs roughly October to June; the core is closed in the monsoon.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun cover and water for the open temple sites, a dust buff for the rural roads, neutral clothing and binoculars if you add Kuno, basic tools and a puncture kit, and cash. Nothing technical.
Ride this with a group
We run the Morena cluster as a three-night ride through Chambal temple country — the yogini circle, the fort-temple and the restored Bateshwar group in a slow half-day, Kuno as an option, and a clean-up of the sites as the service action.
