Delhi to Murthal — the Highway Dhabas

Murthal, about 50 km north of Delhi on the old Grand Trunk Road, is a strip of highway dhabas known across the region for stuffed paranthas. It is the classic Delhi breakfast ride — an early start, a fast run out of the city, a big plate of food, and home before the day heats up. It is not a destination in the usual sense, and that is the point.

The ride

Delhi → Kundli → Murthal, straight up the national highway that follows the old Sher Shah Suri Marg, the Grand Trunk Road. Leave at first light — the highway is at its best, and the dhabas open early.

The dhabas at Murthal run from breakfast through the night, and queues form on weekend mornings. Pick a busy one; turnover means fresh food. If you want to stretch the ride, carry on north to Sonipat or Panipat, where the old road passes Mughal-era milestones called kos minars.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Murthal

Delhi → Kundli → Murthal (1–1.5 hours). Leave at first light to miss the highway traffic.

  2. Breakfast at the dhabas

Order a couple of stuffed paranthas with curd and pickle, and share plates. Park where you can see your bike.

  3. Back to Delhi

Ride back before the mid-morning traffic builds up on the highway.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy — there are pumps all along the highway; fill up in Delhi before you set out.
  • There are pumps at Murthal itself if you need them, and none is needed for this short ride.
  • No stay is needed. If you want to make it longer, Panipat and Sonipat have a range of hotels.

Road & conditions

Sealed national highway all the way, with the usual heavy truck traffic in the daytime. Early morning is the best time. The Kundli–Murthal stretch has service roads and U-turns, so watch for vehicles coming the wrong way. Weekend dhaba parking is crowded — park with care, and lock your bike.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is comfortable; winter mornings are cold and foggy, so wait for the fog to lift before starting. Summers are hot from April, so go at dawn. The monsoon is fine for the ride but wet.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a jacket for the early-morning highway in winter, and an appetite. Wet wipes are worth carrying.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Highway dhaba strips generate a lot of plastic and food waste. On group rides here, we choose busy places with proper bins, and carry out what we use.
