Delhi to Nachiketa Tal
Nachiketa Tal is a small, still lake at about 2,430 m in the forest above Uttarkashi, ringed by oak and rhododendron with a tiny temple on the shore. It is a walk of roughly 3 km from Chaurangi Khal on the Uttarkashi–Lambgaon road — no shops, no boats, barely a signboard, and on most days almost no one.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 860–940 km
- Riding time
- 10–11 hours each way, plus a 3 km walk each way to the lake
- Nights
- Two nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Rishikesh, Narendranagar and Chamba)
- Highest point
- About 2,430 m at the lake
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good Char Dham highway to Uttarkashi, then a narrow hill road to Chaurangi Khal and a short forest walk.
- Surface
- Sealed the whole way — the widened Gangotri highway to Uttarkashi, then a single-lane but decent hill road to Chaurangi Khal
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. Winter can ice the walk; the monsoon clouds the forest, brings leeches and slips on the Gangotri highway.
The ride
Delhi → Rishikesh → Narendranagar → Chamba → Uttarkashi on the Gangotri highway, then the quieter road toward Lambgaon to Chaurangi Khal, the roadhead village.
Walk up through the oak to Nachiketa Tal — a couple of hours, easy but for one pull — and sit by the water. Uttarkashi's Vishwanath temple and the road on toward Harsil or Dodital are close if you want a third day.
Day by day
Delhi to Uttarkashi
Delhi → Rishikesh → Chamba → Uttarkashi (10–11 hours on the widened highway). Overnight at Uttarkashi, around 1,150 m.
Nachiketa Tal
Ride to Chaurangi Khal and walk up to the lake; a slow few hours by the water. Afternoon in Uttarkashi.
Uttarkashi to Delhi
Back down the Gangotri highway. Leave early to clear Chamba and Narendranagar before the Gangotri buses.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way to Uttarkashi — Rishikesh, Narendranagar, Chamba and Uttarkashi all have pumps.
- Fill up at Uttarkashi before the turn to Chaurangi Khal — the Lambgaon road has no reliable fuel.
- Chaurangi Khal has a couple of basic homestays; Uttarkashi has proper hotels. Carry cash and food for the lake.
Road & conditions
The Rishikesh–Uttarkashi leg is the widened Gangotri highway — fast in stretches, with roadwork, blasting halts and Gangotri-season buses. The turn to Chaurangi Khal is a narrow single-lane hill road, decently surfaced. The lake trail is a simple forest walk, exposed and slippery only if frosted or wet. Ride the highway in daylight and give the buses room on the drop-offs.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
Mid-September to November is clearest, with rhododendron colour in spring. March to June is mild and green. Winter can ice the walk and is cold at Uttarkashi. The monsoon makes the forest atmospheric but leech-prone and slows the highway with slips.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: proper walking shoes, a warm layer for the lake, water and a snack, and a rain shell for the highway. Nothing technical on the bike.
Ride this with a group
We run Nachiketa Tal as an easy two-night ride to a lake with nothing built around it — the highway paced around the Gangotri traffic, the walk kept unhurried, and a shore clean-up as the service action.
