Delhi to Naggar Castle & the Roerich Estate
Naggar, on the quiet left bank of the Kullu valley, was the old capital of the Kullu rajas. Naggar Castle is a roughly 500-year-old building of stone courses and cedar beams, now a heritage hotel with a small museum and the Jagatipatt shrine stone. On the hillside above sits the Roerich estate — the home, studio and gallery of the painter Nicholas Roerich, who settled here in 1928, with his Himalayan canvases and mountain views.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,000–1,100 km
- Riding time
- 10–11 hours each way — best split at Mandi
- Nights
- Three nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh, Mandi and Kullu)
- Highest point
- About 1,850 m at Naggar (higher on the Roerich ridge)
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good highway and valley roads; the Naggar left-bank road is a narrow but sound hill road.
- Surface
- Sealed throughout — the widened Kullu highway to Kullu, then the quieter left-bank road to Naggar
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. The monsoon (Jul–Aug) slides the Mandi–Kullu stretch; winter is cold with snow on the higher ridges.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Bhuntar → Kullu, then cross to the left bank and follow the quieter road to Naggar — a good way to skip the Kullu–Manali tourist crush.
At Naggar: the castle and its museum, the Roerich estate and the Urusvati Himalayan research institute, and the old wooden temples — Tripura Sundari, Gauri Shankar, Jagatipatt. Ride on to the Naggar–Rumsu apple villages, or up toward the Chandrakhani trailhead. Manali is 20 km on if you want it.
Day by day
Delhi to Mandi
Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi (9–10 hours). Overnight Mandi.
Mandi to Naggar
Mandi → Bhuntar → Kullu → the left-bank road to Naggar (3–4 hours). Settle in the village.
Naggar
The castle, the Roerich estate and gallery, and the wooden temples. A slow day; ride up toward Rumsu in the afternoon.
Naggar to Delhi
Down the valley early, then the long highway home via Mandi. First light.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Kullu on the widened highway.
- Cross to the left bank at Kullu and fill there if needed — Naggar has only a small pump.
- Naggar has the castle heritage hotel, homestays and cafes; keep numbers reasonable in the spring/autumn peaks. Carry some cash for the smaller places and the gallery entry.
Road & conditions
Delhi to Mandi is highway; Mandi to Kullu is the much-improved Kullu valley road, still slow in the towns and slide-prone in the monsoon. The left-bank road from Kullu to Naggar is a narrow but sound hill road, far quieter than the main highway. Nothing technical. Watch for apple-truck traffic in season and cattle on the village stretches.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
March to June is mild with apple blossom then leaf. Mid-September to November is clear and settled after the monsoon, with autumn colour. Avoid July and August — the Mandi–Kullu stretch slides. Winter is cold with snow on the ridges above Naggar.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the Naggar evenings, a rain shell, and cash. Walking shoes for the estate and the temple lanes. Nothing technical.
Ride this with a group
We run Naggar as a quiet three-night ride on the Kullu valley's left bank — the tourist crush skipped, a slow day among old stone and a painter's studio, and an estate-path and village-road clean-up as the service action.
