Delhi to Malana

Malana, in a hanging side-valley above the Parvati, is one of the most insular villages in the Himalaya — it runs its own council in the name of the deity Jamlu, speaks its own dialect (Kanashi), and keeps strict rules about outsiders touching people, houses and the Jamlu Devta temple. You ride to the Malana dam roadhead via Jari, then walk a short, steep hour up. Going here means going on the village's terms.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Bhuntar → Jari, then the steep, rough spur to the Malana dam roadhead. From there it is a short, sharp climb to the village.

Visit Malana as a day trip from a Jari or Kasol base. Follow the rules: do not touch villagers, houses, the temple or its structures, do not enter the temple precinct, ask before photographing people, and buy from the shop counters rather than handling goods on the shelves. The Chandrakhani pass trail links Malana with Naggar over the ridge if you want the longer walk another time.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Mandi

Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi (9–10 hours). Overnight Mandi.

  2. Mandi to Jari / Kasol

Mandi → Bhuntar → Jari (3–4 hours). Settle at Jari or Kasol.

  3. Malana day trip

Ride the spur to the dam roadhead, walk up, and visit the village by its rules. Back to Jari/Kasol.

  4. Jari to Delhi

Down the valley early, then the long highway home. First light.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Bhuntar on the Kullu highway.
  • Fill up at Bhuntar or Jari before the Malana dam spur — there is no fuel up there.
  • Jari and Kasol have guesthouses and cafes; Malana has a few basic homestays but the village prefers day visitors, and the rules make an overnight awkward. Carry cash; signal is poor above Jari.

Road & conditions

Delhi to Bhuntar is highway and the widened Kullu road. Bhuntar to Jari is a decent valley road. The Jari–Malana dam spur is the rough bit: steep, narrow, part-broken, cut above the Malana Nala, and sometimes closed by slides after rain. Ride it slowly and dry, and check at Jari whether it is open. The climb from the dam is a walking trail.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Altitude & acclimatisation ~2,650 m highest point. Gentle — the climb is spread over enough time that most riders adjust without trouble. Still: hydrate, skip alcohol, sleep low where you can. The day-by-day shows where you sleep each night.

Best time to ride

Late April to June and mid-September to November — clear, and the spur road at its best. The monsoon slides the spur and makes the walk greasy. Winter snows Malana and the trail, and the spur road can ice up.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: walking shoes for the climb from the dam, a warm layer for the village (2,650 m), a rain shell, and cash. Nothing technical, but ride the spur with care.

Malana has its own laws and enforces them — visit respectfully or not at all. Do not touch villagers, houses, walls, the temple or its idols and structures; stay out of the temple precinct entirely; ask before photographing people; and handle nothing in the shops — point and let the shopkeeper pass it to you. Fines are levied for breaking these rules. Keep well away from the charas trade the village is known for — it is illegal and it brings trouble.
The ROAR service stop on this route. The Malana dam roadhead, the village trail and the stream below carry trekker and tourist litter. We run a carry-down clean-up of the trail and the roadhead — without entering the village precinct — and haul the waste out to Jari.

Ride this with a group

We run Malana as a respectful day visit on a three-night Parvati trip — the rough spur ridden slow and dry, the village entered by its rules, nothing touched, and a trail-and-roadhead clean-up as the service action.
