Delhi to Narnaul & its Sur–Mughal Tombs

Narnaul, in the dry Aravalli-edge country of southern Haryana, is a small town with a large stock of sixteenth-century monuments — the tomb of Ibrahim Khan Sur, grandfather of Sher Shah Suri, a Mughal-era water palace in a stepped tank, and a minister's pavilion on a hill. It is a very easy day trip from Delhi that almost nobody makes.

The ride

Delhi → Gurugram → Rewari → Narnaul. Narnaul was a regional centre under the Sur and Mughal rulers, and its monuments show it.

See the tomb of Ibrahim Khan Sur, the Jal Mahal set in a large stepped tank, Chor Gumbad and the hilltop Chhatta associated with Birbal, Akbar's minister. The monuments are lightly visited, so bring water and expect no facilities. Dhosi Hill, an extinct volcano nearby, has its own page in the library.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Narnaul

Delhi → Gurugram → Rewari → Narnaul (about 3 hours). Have a late breakfast in Rewari on the way.

  2. The monuments

Ride between the tombs, the Jal Mahal and the hilltop pavilion, with plenty of time on foot at each.

  3. Narnaul to Delhi

Back the way you came. Leave by mid-afternoon to be in Delhi before the evening rush.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy — Gurugram, Rewari and Narnaul all have pumps.
  • There are no pumps at the monuments, and none are needed on a day ride of this length.
  • No stay is needed. Narnaul has a few basic hotels; Rewari has more options if you want to make it two days.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Gurugram–Rewari highway is busy with trucks and toll plazas; beyond Rewari the road to Narnaul is a two-lane highway with local traffic. Monument lanes in Narnaul are narrow and can be dusty. There is little signage, so carry a map or use GPS.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is the comfortable window. Summers are very hot, so go at first light or wait for autumn. The monsoon is short and green but humid.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a scarf against dust and sun, comfortable shoes for the tomb compounds, and plenty of water.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Lightly visited monuments still collect litter, and stepped tanks trap plastic. On group rides here, we pick up what we find at our stops and carry it out.
