Delhi to Palampur

Palampur sits in the middle of Himachal's tea belt, rolling gardens laid out against the Dhauladhar range at about 1,200 m — genuinely different scenery from anywhere else in this library, and a working agricultural town rather than a tourist strip, despite the views.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Una → Palampur, a straightforward run into the Kangra valley's tea country — the road runs through actual working gardens for the last stretch, with the Dhauladhar wall rising directly behind them.

Walk a tea estate if one allows visitors, and ride out to Andretta, an old artists' colony with a pottery tradition, or the Baijnath temple, a well-preserved 13th-century Shiva shrine a short distance away. This is a genuinely different landscape from the rest of the Kangra valley circuit.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Palampur

Delhi → Chandigarh → Una → Palampur (9–10 hours). Settle in and walk a tea garden in the evening light.

  2. Andretta and Baijnath

Ride out to the Andretta artists' colony and the Baijnath temple. An easy, unhurried day.

  3. Palampur to Delhi

Back through Una and Chandigarh. Start reasonably early for the long haul home.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — Chandigarh, Una and Palampur all have pumps.
  • Palampur has hotels and tea-estate-adjacent guesthouses across budgets.

Road & conditions

Sealed and in good condition throughout. The Una to Palampur stretch is a gentle, scenic hill run rather than a demanding climb — one of the easier rides in the mountain section, with genuinely different scenery (tea gardens rather than pine forest) for the last hour or so.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to June is good, with winter giving the clearest Dhauladhar backdrop over the green tea gardens. The monsoon (June–September) is actually the tea-growing season and the gardens are at their most vivid, but visibility on the ride itself drops. Spring is pleasant and mild.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: nothing special. A camera for the tea-garden-against-mountain views.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The roadside pull-offs near the tea gardens and the Baijnath temple grounds collect light visitor litter. We run a short clean-up on our visits.

Ride this with a group

We run Palampur as a flexible one-to-two-night weekend, built around the tea gardens and the quieter Kangra-valley side trips.
