Delhi to Shangarh & the Sainj Valley

The Sainj Valley is the quiet middle sister of Tirthan and Kullu, running up into the Great Himalayan National Park. Near its head, Shangarh is a single, almost perfectly level meadow at about 2,000 m, ringed by tall deodar, with the wooden Shangchul Mahadev temple at one edge. It is protected by local custom — no litter, no shoes on the grass in places — and it stays uncannily calm.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Aut (the Kullu-highway tunnel), then turn into the Sainj valley — Larji, Sainj town, Neuli — and climb the link road to Shangarh.

Beyond the meadow: the walk to the twin hamlets of Pundrik Rishi lake, the trail up toward Raktisar and the GHNP proper, and the old wood-and-stone architecture of the Sainj villages. Tirthan and Jibhi are one valley over if you want to link them.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Mandi

Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi (9–10 hours). Overnight Mandi.

  2. Mandi to Shangarh

Mandi → Aut → Sainj → the link climb to Shangarh (3–4 hours). Settle at a homestay by the meadow.

  3. Shangarh and the Sainj valley

A slow day: the meadow and temple, the walk to Pundrik Rishi lake, the old villages. Respect the local no-litter and no-shoes customs.

  4. Shangarh to Delhi

Down the link road early, then the long highway home via Mandi. First light.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Aut on the Kullu highway — Mandi and Aut have pumps.
  • There is a small pump near Sainj town.
  • Fill up at Aut or Sainj before the Shangarh climb — the meadow and the upper villages have no fuel.
  • Shangarh has a growing set of homestays and small guesthouses; keep numbers low and book ahead in the spring and autumn peaks. Carry cash. The meadow itself has no shops — do not expect services on it.

Road & conditions

Good, fast highway to Mandi, then the widened Kullu-valley road to Aut, slide-prone in the monsoon around the Mandi–Pandoh stretch. The Sainj valley road is a decent single-lane hill road; the final climb to Shangarh is narrow, steep and broken in patches. Nothing technical, but slow. Watch for construction traffic on the highway and cattle on the village stretches.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

March to June is green and mild, with the meadow at its best. Mid-September to November is clear and settled after the monsoon, with autumn colour in the deodar. Avoid July and August — the highway slides and the Shangarh link turns greasy. Winter can snow-close the last climb, though Sainj town stays reachable.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the meadow evenings, walking shoes for the Pundrik Rishi and GHNP trails, a rain shell for the highway, and cash. Nothing technical.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Shangarh's fame has brought weekend litter that the local custom is trying hard to keep out. We back that custom: a clean-up of the meadow edge, the temple approach and the Pundrik Rishi trail, with the waste carried down to Sainj — and we ask riders to leave the grass exactly as they found it.

Ride this with a group

We run Shangarh and Sainj as a quiet three-night ride into the GHNP buffer — the highway day split at Mandi, small numbers on the meadow, the local no-litter custom respected, and a meadow-edge clean-up carried out to Sainj.
