Delhi to Srinagar (Garhwal) & Dhari Devi

Srinagar is the largest town in Garhwal's Alaknanda valley — a warm, low, working university town on the Char Dham road, with the Dhari Devi shrine a short ride upstream. It is a quiet, river-level introduction to Garhwal that is easy to reach and mostly overlooked on the way to higher destinations.

The ride

Delhi → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar. Past Rishikesh the highway follows the Ganga, then, after Devprayag, the Alaknanda, for most of the way. Srinagar is one of the warmest towns in Garhwal.

The Dhari Devi shrine, about 15 km upstream, stands on a platform in the Alaknanda. The goddess is believed to protect the Char Dham region, and the idol was moved to a raised platform when the river valley was dammed. In town, the Kamleshwar and Kilkileshwar temples are the quiet stops.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Srinagar

Delhi → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar (7–8 hours). Settle in, and walk by the river in the evening.

  2. Dhari Devi and the river

Ride upstream to Dhari Devi in the morning, then back to Srinagar for the town's temples and the riverbank.

  3. Srinagar to Delhi

Back down the Alaknanda and Ganga to Rishikesh and the plains. Leave early; the highway is slow behind pilgrim traffic in season.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Rishikesh. There are pumps at Devprayag and in Srinagar.
  • Fill up at Rishikesh and again at Devprayag before the Srinagar stretch; small pumps beyond may be dry at night.
  • Srinagar has budget hotels and guesthouses; there are few upmarket stays, so book ahead in the yatra season.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Haridwar highway is fast and busy with trucks; Rishikesh to Srinagar is the Char Dham highway, a winding two-lane road above the river with heavy pilgrim traffic in May–June and landslide risk in the monsoon. Expect slow sections, single-lane bottlenecks and occasional closures. Check road status before you ride.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is the comfortable window — cool, dry and clear. Summers are very hot in this low valley, and April–June is pilgrim season and congested. The monsoon (July–September) is the risky period for the road.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a light jacket for the river-valley mornings, comfortable shoes for the temple approach, and sun protection — this valley runs warm.

The ROAR service stop on this route. River banks and temple approaches in the Alaknanda valley collect offerings and plastic. On group rides here, we pick up what we find at our stops and carry it out.
