Delhi to Chakrata & Deoban

Chakrata is an old British-era cantonment that tourism mostly forgot — no big market, no traffic, just a quiet hill town at around 2,100 m. Above it, a rough 12 km forest road climbs to Deoban at about 2,900 m, into some of the least-disturbed deodar near Delhi. On the way up is Tiger Falls.

Schematic route diagram — not to scale. Distances and heights are indicative.

The ride

Delhi → Saharanpur → Vikasnagar → Kalsi, where the Yamuna comes out of the hills, then a long winding climb to Chakrata. From Chakrata a rough forest road runs about 12 km up to Deoban — go slow, it is loose in places, but most bikes manage it with a steady hand.

Things to do: walk down to Tiger Falls (steep 1.5 km each way), sit out sunrise at Deoban among the old cedars, ride to Chilmiri Neck for the ridge view, and — with time — the detour to Kanasar, home to one of Asia's tallest deodar trees.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Chakrata

Delhi → Saharanpur → Vikasnagar → Kalsi → Chakrata (7–8 hours). Fuel before the hills — see the fuel note. Arrive with daylight to spare; the last climb is slow.

  2. Chakrata, Deoban and Tiger Falls

Ride the forest track up to Deoban early for the light, then back down and walk to Tiger Falls in the afternoon. Evening in Chakrata town, which shuts early.

  3. Chakrata to Delhi

Descend to Kalsi in the morning, then the long plains run home. Leave early.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is fine up to Vikasnagar and Kalsi — fill up completely here.
  • Chakrata has a pump but it can run dry and the Deoban track has nothing. Treat Kalsi as your last certain fuel, and carry a small spare if your range is tight.
  • Chakrata has guesthouses, forest rest houses and a few homestays — limited, so book ahead. Food is simple and local.

Road & conditions

The Kalsi–Chakrata road is a proper hill road — many bends, some broken tarmac, occasional rockfall. The Chakrata–Deoban stretch is an unsurfaced forest track: rutted, loose, slippery when damp. Ride it slowly, feet ready, and turn around if it has rained hard. Mist rolls in fast at Deoban in the afternoon.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Altitude & acclimatisation ~2,900 m highest point. Gentle — the climb is spread over enough time that most riders adjust without trouble. Still: hydrate, skip alcohol, sleep low where you can. The day-by-day shows where you sleep each night.

Permits & local rules

Chakrata is a cantonment and a restricted area. Foreign nationals are not permitted. Indian citizens can visit the town, Tiger Falls and Deoban, but several roads and points are army-controlled and closed to visitors, and photography is restricted in parts. Ask locally about current access before you plan side trips, follow every sign, and do not enter marked military zones.

Best time to ride

March to June is cool and green; September to November is clear and quiet after the rains. Winter brings snow to Deoban and ice on the shaded bends — only for the well-prepared. The monsoon makes the forest track dangerous and the Kalsi road slip-prone; give July–August a miss.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: sturdy footwear for the Tiger Falls and Deoban walks, a warm windproof layer, a headlamp, and enough cash — card and UPI coverage is patchy up here.

The ROAR service stop on this route. A clean-up on the Tiger Falls trail, which collects bottles and wrappers despite how few people visit, and carrying that waste back down to Chakrata rather than leaving it for the forest.

Ride this with a group

We run Chakrata as a small-group offbeat weekend — the cantonment rules briefed in advance, the Deoban track ridden together, and a trail clean-up at Tiger Falls.
