Delhi to Tiger Falls & Chakrata (camping)
Beyond the cantonment hill town of Chakrata, a forest road leads out to Tiger Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the region — a drop of roughly ninety metres into a green pool below. A short walk from the roadhead brings you to it, and the small camps nearby make it a proper ride-and-camp weekend on a quiet stretch of the Uttarakhand hills.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 690–750 km
- Riding time
- About 8–9 hours each way
- Nights
- Two nights — one for the long ride up, one at the falls
- Start point
- Delhi (via Dehradun and Vikasnagar)
- Highest point
- About 2,120 m at Chakrata; the camps and falls are lower
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Long hill roads; the last stretch to the falls is narrow and rough in places, followed by a short walk.
- Surface
- Sealed to Chakrata; a narrower road and a short walk beyond
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. The falls run strongest just after the monsoon; the monsoon itself brings landslide risk.
The ride
Delhi → Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Chakrata. The road climbs from the Yamuna valley into cedar and oak forest, and Chakrata is a quiet cantonment town at about 2,100 m.
From Chakrata, a narrower road runs about 20 km to the roadhead for Tiger Falls, from where a short trail leads to the base of the fall. Camps near the village of Kimona offer tents and basic food. Chakrata is a cantonment area; carry ID, and check current rules for any foreign guests in your group.
Day by day
Delhi to Chakrata
Delhi → Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Chakrata (8–9 hours). Settle in and spend the last light on the ridge.
Tiger Falls and the camp
Ride the forest road to the roadhead, walk to the falls, then settle into the camp for the night.
Camp to Delhi
Back through Chakrata, Vikasnagar and Dehradun. A long day — leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Dehradun. Fill up there and again at Vikasnagar; there is a pump at Chakrata, but do not rely on it late.
- There are no pumps beyond Chakrata. A full tank plus 3–5 litres of spare is sensible for the forest-road out-and-back.
- The camps offer tents and simple meals. Confirm what is included, and bring your own sleeping bag if you are not sure.
Road & conditions
Sealed to Chakrata, on a road that is good but narrow and winding in the last stretch. Beyond Chakrata the road toward the falls is narrower and can be rough, with potholes and washed-out edges after rain. Landslides can close the Vikasnagar–Chakrata road in July–September. Fog and rain can come in fast.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
March to June and September to November are the working windows. Autumn gives the fullest falls after the monsoon and the clearest air. Winter is cold and can bring snow to Chakrata. The monsoon is the risky season for the road.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: trekking shoes with grip for the wet trail, a quick-dry layer, and a waterproof bag — the falls spray a lot.
