Delhi to Udaipur
Udaipur is a lake city in the folds of the Aravallis — a palace complex on the edge of Lake Pichola, marble ghats, small islands with palaces on them, and hills around it. It is a long ride from Delhi, and it works best as a properly split journey: two riding days, one night on the way, and a full day to walk the city.

- About 1,300–1,380 km
- Riding time
- About 11–12 hours each way; split with a night at Jaipur, Ajmer or Chittorgarh
- Nights
- Three nights — one on the road each way, and one in the city
- Start point
- Delhi (via Jaipur, Ajmer and Chittorgarh)
- Highest point
- About 600 m in the city; the Monsoon Palace ridge is higher
- Difficulty
- Easy. Fast four-lane highway nearly all the way; the length is the challenge.
- Surface
- Four-lane national highway; city and palace lanes are narrow and crowded
- Best season
- October to March. Mild and dry; summers are very hot; the monsoon greens the lakes and hills.
The ride
Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer → Chittorgarh → Udaipur, on a fast highway with tolls. Chittorgarh's great fort sits just off the road and is worth a stop if you have the time.
In Udaipur, walk the City Palace and the Lake Pichola ghats, take a boat to the island palaces, and ride up to the Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) hill for the sunset. Haldighati, the site of the 1576 battle with Maharana Pratap, is a short ride out of the city.
Day by day
Delhi to Jaipur or Ajmer
Delhi → Jaipur → Ajmer (7–8 hours). A comfortable first day; stay at Jaipur, Ajmer or push on to Chittorgarh.
Into Udaipur
Ajmer → Chittorgarh → Udaipur. Stop at the Chittorgarh fort if time allows, then reach Udaipur for the evening.
Udaipur
Walk the City Palace and the ghats, take a lake boat, and ride to Sajjangarh at sunset.
Udaipur to Delhi
Split the ride back the same way, with a night at Jaipur or Ajmer, or one very long day.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy on the whole highway — pumps are frequent from Delhi to Chittorgarh and on to Udaipur.
- Fill up at Chittorgarh before the last leg into the hills toward Udaipur.
- Udaipur has stays from budget hostels to lake palaces. Book ahead in October–March, and confirm parking near the old city.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Jaipur–Ajmer–Chittorgarh–Udaipur highway is four-lane with tolls and heavy truck traffic, especially around Jaipur. The last stretch toward Udaipur is a hill highway with bends and, at times, fog in winter mornings. The old city and the lanes near the City Palace are narrow and crowded — park at your stay and walk.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to March is the comfortable window — mild, dry and clear. Summers are very hot from April. The monsoon (July–September) fills the lakes and turns the hills green, but the roads are wet and the city is humid.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a scarf and sunglasses for the long highway, comfortable shoes for palace stairs, and a light jacket for evenings by the lake in winter.
