Delhi to Barot Valley
Barot sits at about 1,900 m on the Uhl river in Mandi district, reached by a narrow road that peels off the Jogindernagar ridge and drops through forest into the valley. It grew up around a 1920s hydro-haulage project, the river is stocked with trout, and the forest behind it is the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary. It stays quiet because it is just far enough off the Manali highway.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,100–1,200 km
- Riding time
- 10–11 hours each way — a long day, best split at Mandi or Sundernagar
- Nights
- Two nights in the valley
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi)
- Highest point
- About 2,100 m on the Jhatingri ridge; Barot sits near 1,900 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Highway plus one narrow single-track hill road with rough patches — nothing technical.
- Surface
- NH to Mandi and Jogindernagar is good; the 40 km Jogindernagar–Barot road is single-lane tar with broken sections and blind corners
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. Winter is cold with occasional snow on the Jhatingri ridge; the monsoon brings slides on the valley road.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi, then the Pathankot road to Jogindernagar. From there a small road climbs to the Jhatingri ridge and the old Raja's forest bungalow, then drops through pine and oak to Barot on the river.
In the valley: walk the haulage trolley line and the dam, fish or watch for trout in the Uhl, and ride or walk up-valley towards Lohardi and Multhan. Fit riders can leave the bikes and trek over to Rajgundha and the Billing take-off above Bir — a beautiful two-day crossing.
Day by day
Delhi to Mandi
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi (9–10 hours). Sleep at Mandi or nearby Sundernagar.
Mandi to Barot
Mandi → Jogindernagar → Jhatingri → Barot (3–4 hours on the narrow road). Fuel at Jogindernagar. Settle into the valley.
Barot day
The trolley line and dam, the river, and a ride or walk up towards Multhan and Lohardi. Slow day.
Barot to Delhi
Retrace to Jogindernagar and Mandi, then the long highway home. Leave early; the Bilaspur stretch is slow in the afternoon.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Mandi and on to Jogindernagar.
- Jogindernagar has the last reliable pump. Barot and the up-valley villages have none — fill at Jogindernagar; it is roughly 40 km in and out plus local riding.
- Barot has guesthouses, riverside camps and homestays across budgets, busier on summer weekends. Book ahead in season. Carry cash; card and signal are patchy.
Road & conditions
The highway to Mandi and Jogindernagar is good and fast in stretches, slow and truck-heavy through Bilaspur and around Mandi. The Jogindernagar–Barot road is the character of the trip: single-lane tar, broken in places, with blind forested corners and a steady drop on one side. It is not difficult, but ride it in daylight, use the horn on corners, and give buses and jeeps the inside line.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
- Spare fuel
- Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
March to June is green and mild, the valley at its best. September to November is clear and quiet after the monsoon. Winter is cold and the Jhatingri ridge can see snow. July and August bring slides and blocked culverts on the valley road — check locally before committing.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the riverside evenings, a light rain shell, and cash. If you plan the Rajgundha crossing, add trekking shoes and a daypack and arrange a guide in Barot.
Ride this with a group
We run Barot as an easy two-night Himachal weekend — the long day split at Mandi, the single-track valley road briefed and ridden in daylight, and a riverbank clean-up as the service action.
