Delhi to Sarahan & the Bhimakali Temple

Sarahan, at about 2,165 m above the Sutlej, was the old summer capital of the Bushahr kingdom. Its Bhimakali temple is a pair of tall slate-roofed towers of stone and timber, one leaning, in a walled courtyard — one of the finest Kath-Kuni buildings in Himachal. There is a Western Tragopan pheasant breeding centre next door, and an apple ridge with a clean Srikhand Mahadev view. Almost everyone blows past the Jeori turn-off on the way to Kinnaur.

10–11 hours each way — the Shimla approach is the slow part; best split at Shimla or Narkanda
Nights
Three nights
Start point
Delhi (via Chandigarh, Shimla and Rampur)
Highest point
About 2,165 m at Sarahan
Difficulty
Moderate. Good hill roads apart from a short, steep 17 km climb from Jeori and the usual Shimla traffic.
Surface
Sealed the whole way — Chandigarh–Shimla–Narkanda–Rampur is a good hill highway; the Jeori–Sarahan spur is a steep but sound 17 km climb
Best season
March to June and September to November. Winter brings snow to the Sarahan ridge; the monsoon brings slides to the Sutlej valley near Rampur and cloud over the peaks.

The ride

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur on the Hindustan-Tibet road, then Jeori and the steep 17 km spur up to Sarahan. Bypass central Shimla — it is the only real traffic on the route.

At Sarahan: the Bhimakali complex (dress modestly, remove leather, follow the entry rules), the pheasantry, and the apple orchards along the ridge with the Srikhand massif beyond. The Bashal peak walk above the village is a good half-day, and the Kinnaur road proper starts just up the valley if you want to press on to Chitkul or Sangla another time.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Narkanda

Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda (8–9 hours with the Shimla crawl). Overnight Narkanda, ~2,700 m.

  2. Narkanda to Sarahan

Rampur → Jeori → the 17 km climb to Sarahan (3–4 hours). Afternoon at the Bhimakali temple and the pheasantry.

  3. Sarahan and the ridge

The Bashal peak walk, the orchards, and a slow morning at the temple. Overnight Sarahan.

  4. Sarahan to Delhi

Down to Rampur and the long ride home via Shimla. Start early to clear Shimla and Solan.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Shimla, and along the valley through Narkanda to Rampur.
  • There is a pump at Jeori at the foot of the spur.
  • Fill up at Rampur or Jeori before the climb — Sarahan itself has no fuel.
  • Sarahan has an HPTDC hotel (some rooms overlook the temple), a temple sarai and a few guesthouses. Book the view rooms ahead in season. Carry cash.

Road & conditions

Good hill highway from Chandigarh, with Shimla the one bottleneck — use the bypass. Shimla to Rampur along the Hindustan-Tibet road is well surfaced but can carry slide debris in the monsoon near the Sutlej. The Jeori–Sarahan spur is a steep, tight, 17 km climb, sound but slow. Ride the valley stretch in daylight and give buses room on the drops.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
One long stretch without a pump — fill up before it and top off where you can.
Spare fuel
Carry 3–5 litres of spare fuel.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

March to June is mild with apple blossom then leaf, and clear Srikhand views. Mid-September to November is crisp after the monsoon with the harvest on. Winter snows the Sarahan ridge and can make the spur icy. The monsoon clouds the peaks and can drop debris on the Rampur stretch.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evenings, modest clothing and socks for the Bhimakali temple (no leather inside), a rain shell, and cash. Nothing technical.

The ROAR service stop on this route. The temple approach lanes, the pheasantry surrounds and the Bashal peak path collect visitor litter. We run a clean-up along the approach and the ridge path and carry the waste down to Rampur.

Ride this with a group

We run Sarahan as an easy three-night ride to the gateway of Kinnaur — the Shimla crossing timed to miss the jams, the temple visited by its rules, and an approach-and-ridge clean-up as the service action.
