Delhi to Dalhousie & Khajjiar
Dalhousie is a small colonial hill town spread over five low ridges at about 2,000 m, laid out by the British in the 1850s and still full of stone churches, cedar walks and Raj-era bungalows. A short forest road through the Kalatop sanctuary leads to Khajjiar, a round green meadow with a pond in the middle that the tourist boards like to call the ‘mini Switzerland of India’. It is an easy, scenic first ride into Himachal.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 1,100–1,200 km
- Riding time
- 9–10 hours each way — a long but easy highway-and-hills day
- Nights
- Two nights
- Start point
- Delhi (via Panipat, Ambala and Pathankot)
- Highest point
- About 2,400 m on the Dalhousie ridge and at Kalatop
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Long distance but easy roads throughout — a good route for a first Himalayan weekend.
- Surface
- Delhi–Pathankot is fast four-lane; Pathankot–Banikhet–Dalhousie is a good hill road; the Kalatop road to Khajjiar is a narrow, well-surfaced forest lane
- Best season
- March to June and September to November. Winter brings snow to Dalhousie and Khajjiar (pretty, but the roads can ice); the monsoon brings occasional slips on the Banikhet climb.
The ride
Delhi → Panipat → Ambala → Pathankot on fast highway, then up into Himachal through Banikhet to Dalhousie. The town is best walked — Garam Sadak and Thandi Sadak around the ridge, St John's and St Francis churches, and the viewpoint at Dainkund, the highest point above town.
From Dalhousie a forest road runs through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary — cedar and oak, good for a short walk — to the Khajjiar meadow. It is touristy and pony-ride busy in the middle of the day; go early or late. Chamba town, down on the Ravi, is an easy add-on if you want a third night.
Day by day
Delhi to Dalhousie
Delhi → Ambala → Pathankot → Banikhet → Dalhousie (9–10 hours). Long but straightforward. Settle in on the ridge.
Dalhousie, Kalatop and Khajjiar
Walk the town in the morning, ride the Kalatop forest road to Khajjiar for the meadow (early, before the crowds), and back. Optional Dainkund viewpoint at sunset.
Dalhousie to Delhi
Down through Banikhet to Pathankot and the long highway home. Leave early to clear Ambala before dark.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — the Delhi–Pathankot highway is well served, and there are pumps at Pathankot, Banikhet and Dalhousie.
- Khajjiar has no pump; fill at Dalhousie or Banikhet, it is a short loop.
- Dalhousie has hotels across every budget, from Raj-era heritage places to basic lodges; Khajjiar has a few resorts and HPTDC huts. Weekends and the Christmas–New Year week are busy — book ahead.
Road & conditions
This is one of the easier long rides in the library. The Delhi–Pathankot leg is fast four-lane; the climb from Pathankot through Banikhet to Dalhousie is a good, well-graded hill road. The Kalatop road to Khajjiar is narrow but smooth and slow. The only real hazards are weekend tourist traffic, ponies and pedestrians on the Khajjiar meadow road, and ice on the Dalhousie ridge in winter.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
March to June is mild and green. September to November is clear and quieter after the monsoon. Winter turns Dalhousie and Khajjiar into a snow destination — scenic, but the ridge roads can be icy and you need to plan around closures. The monsoon is green but hazy with the odd slip on the Banikhet climb.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evenings, a light rain shell, and comfortable shoes for walking the town. If you ride it in winter, add proper cold-weather gear and be ready to turn back if the ridge is iced.
Ride this with a group
We run Dalhousie and Khajjiar as an easy two-night Himachal weekend — a good first hill ride with the group, the long day paced, and a meadow clean-up at Khajjiar.
