Delhi to Shimla
Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and the hill-station bones still show — the Ridge, Christ Church, the Mall's mock-Tudor shopfronts — wrapped around a working Himachal town at about 2,200 m. It gets more visitors than anywhere else in this library, but it earns the reputation, and it is close enough to Delhi to ride in a single long day.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 660–700 km
- Riding time
- 6–7 hours each way — one of the shortest hill rides in the library
- Nights
- One night is comfortable; a long day trip is possible if you start very early
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh and Solan)
- Highest point
- About 2,276 m at the Ridge
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Fast highway followed by a well-known, well-surfaced hill climb — busy but not difficult.
- Surface
- Excellent sealed road throughout, including the Solan–Shimla climb
- Best season
- October to June. Winter occasionally brings snow to the Ridge itself; the monsoon is wet and can be slow going.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Solan → Shimla, a fast highway run to Chandigarh followed by a well-surfaced, if busy, hill climb — this is the quickest way into serious Himalayan altitude from Delhi, and correspondingly one of the most crowded roads on weekends.
Walk the Ridge and Christ Church, and duck into the older bazaar lanes below the Mall for a quieter, more local feel. Jakhoo Temple, on the highest point in town, is an easy add-on with a good view over the valley.
Day by day
Delhi to Shimla
Delhi → Chandigarh → Solan → Shimla (6–7 hours). Settle in and walk the Ridge in the evening.
Shimla and Jakhoo
Morning walk to Jakhoo Temple for the view, then the older bazaar lanes below the Mall. Head back in the afternoon or stay a second night.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole way — Panipat, Ambala, Chandigarh, Solan and Shimla all have pumps.
- Shimla has hotels across every budget, from heritage colonial-era properties to simple lodges.
Road & conditions
Excellent sealed road throughout, one of the best-maintained hill roads in the library — but also one of the busiest, with heavy tourist and local traffic on the Solan–Shimla stretch, especially on weekends and holidays. Expect slow going near the town itself regardless of your riding pace.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.
Best time to ride
October to June is good, with Shimla busy in peak summer (April–June) when plains heat drives visitors up. Winter occasionally brings snow to the Ridge itself, which is popular but can complicate the ride home. The monsoon is wet and the Solan–Shimla road can be slow with traffic and mist.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: nothing special — this is one of the easiest hill rides in the library. A warm layer for the evenings regardless of season.
Ride this with a group
We run Shimla as a quick, easy one-night weekend — a good first serious-altitude ride for newer riders.
