Delhi to Dwarahat & Dunagiri
Dwarahat, a short ride beyond Ranikhet, is a Kumaon town with dozens of medieval stone temples in a series of groups — a quiet, architectural side of the hills that few riders see. A few kilometres above it, the Dunagiri Devi temple stands on a forested hill, reached by a long stepped path. It is an easy extension of the Ranikhet weekend, for those who want to go further and slower.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 760–820 km
- Riding time
- About 9–10 hours each way
- Nights
- Two nights — the long ride up and a full day for the temples and hill
- Start point
- Delhi (via Kathgodam and Ranikhet)
- Highest point
- About 1,900 m near Dunagiri
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good hill roads; the last stretch is narrow and winding, and the Dunagiri approach involves steps.
- Surface
- Sealed road all the way; the temple approach is a stepped path
- Best season
- October to June. Post-monsoon skies are clearest; winter is cold; the monsoon brings landslide risk.
The ride
Delhi → Kathgodam → Ranikhet → Dwarahat. Beyond Ranikhet the road drops into a broader valley, with terraced fields and oak and pine forest.
Walk the temple groups at Dwarahat — carved stone shrines in a range of medieval styles, set among houses. Dunagiri, on the hill above, has a Devi temple approached by a long stepped path through oak forest, with wide views on clear days. Ranikhet's own ridge and Chaubatia garden are natural add-ons on the way.
Day by day
Delhi to Dwarahat
Delhi → Kathgodam → Ranikhet → Dwarahat (9–10 hours). A long day; start before sunrise and stop at Ranikhet for lunch.
Dwarahat's temples and Dunagiri
Walk the temple groups in the morning, then the stepped path up to Dunagiri Devi in the afternoon light.
Dwarahat to Delhi
Back through Ranikhet, Bhowali and Kathgodam. Another long day — leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Kathgodam. Fill up there or at Ranikhet before the Dwarahat leg.
- Dwarahat has pumps, but small pumps beyond can run dry late in the day.
- Dwarahat and the hill villages have simple guesthouses and homestays; book ahead, and confirm meals.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The plains stretch to Kathgodam is fast but truck-heavy; beyond Ranikhet the road is a good but narrow hill road with steady bends. The distance makes this a long haul — plan early starts. Rain can cause small slips in July–September, and fog in the monsoon is common.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to June is generally good. October–November gives the clearest air; March–April brings rhododendron and blossom. Winter is cold, with snow on the higher ridges. The monsoon is wet and foggy.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the ridge evenings, comfortable shoes for temple lanes and the Dunagiri steps, and a rain jacket from June to September.
