Delhi to Uttarkashi & Gangnani

Uttarkashi sits on the Bhagirathi at the start of the Gangotri road — an old temple town with its own Vishwanath shrine, and the home of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The road north of it climbs to Gangnani, where hot springs rise beside the river, and on toward Harsil and Gangotri. It is a good introduction to the upper Bhagirathi valley, without needing the long ride to Gangotri itself.

Schematic route diagram — not to scale. Distances and heights are indicative.

The ride

Delhi → Dehradun → Chamba → Uttarkashi. The road climbs from Dehradun through Mussoorie's edge to Chamba, then drops toward the Bhagirathi and follows it upstream to Uttarkashi.

In Uttarkashi, see the Vishwanath temple and its tall iron trident, and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, which welcomes visitors to its museum. Ride on about 50 km to Gangnani for the hot springs at the river's edge. Harsil and Gangotri lie further up; both are in the library.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Uttarkashi

Delhi → Dehradun → Chamba → Uttarkashi (9–10 hours). A long day; start before sunrise.

  2. Gangnani and the river road

Ride up to Gangnani for the hot springs and the river scenery, and back to Uttarkashi for the temple and the mountaineering institute.

  3. Uttarkashi to Delhi

Back over Chamba and Mussoorie to Dehradun and the plains. Another long day — leave early.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy to Dehradun. There are pumps at Chamba, New Tehri and Uttarkashi.
  • Fill up at Uttarkashi before the Gangnani road; pumps are few beyond it.
  • Uttarkashi has stays from budget hotels to riverside resorts; Gangnani has a few simple guesthouses by the springs.

Road & conditions

Sealed throughout. The Delhi–Dehradun leg is fast; the climb through Mussoorie is congested at weekends, and beyond Chamba the road is a good but winding hill road with occasional narrow stretches. The road above Uttarkashi toward Gangnani is prone to landslides in July–September; check road status before you go.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
The nearest well-equipped hospital is the valley/district town, one to two hours off; signal is patchy above the bazaar; carry the group lead's number and an emergency card.

Best time to ride

October to June is generally good. October–November gives the clearest air and cold mornings; March–May brings mild days. Winter is cold, and the road above Gangnani can close with snow. The monsoon is the risky season.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the higher road, comfortable shoes for temple lanes and the hot-spring walk, and a rain jacket in the monsoon months.

The ROAR service stop on this route. River banks and temple approaches on the Gangotri road collect offerings and plastic in the yatra season. On group rides here, we pick up what we find at our stops and carry it out.
