Delhi to Naldehra & Tattapani
Beyond Shimla's crowded Mall Road, the hills toward Mashobra and Naldehra are quiet — deodar and pine ridges, a nine-hole golf course laid out over a century ago, and a road that drops steeply to the Sutlej at Tattapani, where sulphur springs rise on the river bank. It is a good way to see the Shimla hills without the Shimla weekend.

- Riding time
- About 9–10 hours each way
- Nights
- Two nights — one on the ridge at Naldehra or Mashobra, one near the Sutlej
- Start point
- Delhi (via Chandigarh and Shimla)
- Highest point
- About 2,150 m at Mashobra; Tattapani is far lower, near 650 m
- Difficulty
- Moderate. Good hill roads; the descent to the Sutlej is steep and winding.
- Surface
- Sealed road all the way
- Best season
- October to June. Winter is cold with occasional snow on the ridge; the monsoon brings landslide delays.
The ride
Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Naldehra. After Shimla, skirt the town to Mashobra and on to Naldehra, a pine-forest ridge about 22 km from Shimla, known for its old golf course and the Mahunag temple.
From Naldehra, drop to the Sutlej at Tattapani, where natural sulphur hot springs are set beside the river. The descent is steep and warm, a big change from the ridge. Return by the same road, or make a night of it near the river.
Day by day
Delhi to Naldehra
Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Naldehra (9–10 hours). Settle in and walk the pine ridge in the evening.
Tattapani and the Sutlej
Ride down to Tattapani for the hot springs and the river, and back up to the ridge or stay near the water.
Back to Delhi
Up through Shimla and down to Chandigarh and the plains. A long day — leave early.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy to Shimla — Chandigarh, Solan and Shimla have plenty of pumps.
- Fill up in Shimla before Naldehra and Tattapani; pumps are few on the ridge and in the Sutlej valley.
- Naldehra and Mashobra have quiet guesthouses and resorts; Tattapani has a few simple stays by the springs.
Road & conditions
Sealed throughout. The Chandigarh–Shimla highway is a well-built four-lane road with tunnels and long climbs; Shimla's town roads are congested, especially on weekends. From Naldehra the road down to Tattapani is steep and winding, with a couple of narrow stretches. Landslides can close the lower road in the monsoon.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- Longest dry stretch is short — a normal tank covers it with margin.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to June is generally good. October–November and March–April are the clearest months. Winter is cold and can bring snow to the ridge. The monsoon (July–September) is wet, with landslide risk on the Sutlej road.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for Naldehra's pine ridge, a swimsuit or towel if you want the springs, and comfortable shoes for the golf-course walk.
