Delhi to Farrukhnagar & Mewat
Farrukhnagar, barely 40 km from Delhi, is a small walled town founded in 1732 as a salt-trade centre — it still has the Sheesh Mahal (a mirror-work palace), the huge octagonal Ghaus Ali Shah baoli step-well, the Delhi Gate and the town wall. South of it, the Mewat (Nuh) district holds the Aravalli hills' quietest corner — the Kotla lake, the Sheikh Musa tomb, and the Firozpur Jhirka ridge — ridden by almost nobody.

At a glance
- Round trip
- About 180–220 km on the loop
- Riding time
- 2–3 hours of actual riding, spread over short hops between stops
- Nights
- One night (or a full day trip)
- Start point
- Delhi (via Gurugram and Sultanpur, or Dwarka and Jhajjar)
- Highest point
- Aravalli fringe — around 250 m
- Difficulty
- Easy. Sealed roads, short distances, no rough sections. A relaxed loop very close to home.
- Surface
- Good roads via Gurugram/Sultanpur to Farrukhnagar; the Sohna–Nuh road and the Mewat back-roads are decent two-lane
- Best season
- October to March for clear, cool weather. April to June is hot with no shade at the step-well or the lake; the monsoon greens the Aravallis.
The ride
Delhi → Gurugram → Sultanpur (the bird sanctuary is right here) → Farrukhnagar. Walk the town: the Sheesh Mahal, the Ghaus Ali Shah baoli, the Delhi Gate and the salt-godown ruins.
Then ride south via Sohna (hot springs) into Mewat: the Kotla lake below the Aravalli ridge, the Sheikh Musa tomb, the Chuhi Mal tank, and the quiet ridge roads toward Firozpur Jhirka. Loop back via Sohna, or push on to the Alwar side.
The loop
- Ride Delhi → Gurugram → Sultanpur → Farrukhnagar and see the Sheesh Mahal, the step-well and the town wall; add the Sultanpur bird sanctuary if it's the season.
- Ride south via Sohna into Mewat — the Kotla lake, the Sheikh Musa tomb, and the Aravalli ridge roads toward Firozpur Jhirka.
- Stay overnight at a farm-stay near Sohna or Damdama, or do the whole thing as a day trip.
- Loop back via Sohna and Gurugram, or extend to the Alwar forts (a separate route).
- On the bike, stick to the sealed roads — the Aravalli tracks are on mining and forest land and are best left alone.
Fuel & services
- Fuel is easy the whole loop — Gurugram, Farrukhnagar, Sohna and Nuh all have pumps.
- No gap of any concern; a normal tank covers the loop with room to spare.
- There is little formal stay in Farrukhnagar or central Mewat — base at a farm-stay near Sohna or Damdama, or ride it as a day trip. Carry some cash for the smaller places.
Road & conditions
Easy sealed roads throughout. The Gurugram–Sultanpur–Farrukhnagar roads are decent two-lane with suburban and village traffic. The Sohna road and the Mewat back-roads are ordinary two-lane, quiet once you are off the Sohna highway, with the usual unmarked breakers and livestock. Watch for the Sohna-road congestion at peak hours. Nothing technical.
Bike, fuel & getting help
- Suggested bike
- Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
- Fuel gap
- No fuel gap worth planning around.
- Spare fuel
- None needed for this route.
- Emergency & logistics
- District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.
Best time to ride
October to March for comfortable riding and walking — the step-well and the lakeshore have no shade. April to June is hot. The monsoon greens the Aravalli ridge and fills the tanks but the back-roads can flood in patches. Winter mornings are foggy on the Gurugram side.
What to add to your kit
Beyond the standard ride kit: sun cover and water for the open sites, a torch for the step-well, comfortable shoes, and cash. Nothing technical — this is an easy one, close to home.
Ride this with a group
We run Farrukhnagar and Mewat as an easy overnight loop very close to home — a forgotten salt town and the quiet Aravalli next door, and a step-well and lakeshore clean-up as the service action.
