Delhi to Nahan, Suketi Fossil Park & Trilokpur

Nahan, at about 930 m in Sirmaur, is a compact, tidy Shivalik town of tanks and colonial streets. Nearby, Suketi Fossil Park sits on the very Shivalik beds where fossils of Sivatherium, Stegodon and the giant tortoise Colossochelys were found — it is billed as Asia's oldest fossil park set up where the fossils were dug, with life-size fibreglass models in the open. The hilltop Trilokpur temple to Mata Bala Sundari is close by.

The ride

Delhi → Karnal → Panchkula → Kala Amb → Nahan. A half-day of easy riding, then the town: Ranital and the other tanks, the Villa Round ridge walk, and the old palace.

Out of town: Suketi Fossil Park (about 25 km, near the Markanda river) with its models and small museum, and the Trilokpur temple on its hill. Renuka Lake is an hour on if you want to link this with a longer Sirmaur ride, and the Jaitak fort above Nahan is a short detour for the historically minded.

Day by day

  1. Delhi to Nahan

Delhi → Karnal → Panchkula → Kala Amb → Nahan (6–7 hours). Settle in town; evening walk around Ranital and the ridge.

  2. Suketi and Trilokpur

Ride out to Suketi Fossil Park and the museum, then the Trilokpur temple, then start home. Add Jaitak fort if there's time.

  3. Nahan to Delhi

Down via Kala Amb and the fast highway home. Leave mid-afternoon to beat the Sunday NH-44 build-up.

Fuel & services

  • Fuel is easy the whole way — NH-44, Panchkula, Kala Amb and Nahan are all well served.
  • Fill up at Kala Amb or Nahan before the Suketi and Trilokpur link roads, which have only small pumps.
  • Nahan has HPTDC and private hotels across budgets. Weekends are moderately busy. Carry some cash for the smaller places and the park entry.

Road & conditions

Easy. NH-44 to Panchkula is fast four-lane; Panchkula through Kala Amb to Nahan is a good road with a short hill climb into town. The Suketi and Trilokpur link roads are quiet sealed lanes. The only hazards are highway trucks on the approach and winter-morning fog — ride the early leg in daylight.

Bike, fuel & getting help

Suggested bike
Fine on a well-maintained 150–200cc commuter.
Fuel gap
No fuel gap worth planning around.
Spare fuel
None needed for this route.
Emergency & logistics
District hospitals within an hour or so; full mobile coverage; mechanics in every town. A short, low-stakes ride.

Best time to ride

October to March is ideal — clear, cool, comfortable for the open fossil park and the ridge walks. April to June is hot on the plains run. The monsoon greens the Shivaliks but turns the fossil-park ground to mud and can bring small slips to the Nahan climb.

What to add to your kit

Beyond the standard ride kit: a warm layer for the Nahan evening, sun cover and water for the open fossil park, and cash. Nothing technical.

The ROAR service stop on this route. Suketi Fossil Park's grounds, the Trilokpur temple approach and the Nahan tanks collect visitor litter. We run a clean-up at the park, the temple steps and the Ranital tank, and hand the waste in at Nahan.

Ride this with a group

We run Nahan, Suketi and Trilokpur as an easy overnight into the Shivalik foothills — a short highway run, a fossil park and a hill temple, and a clean-up of the park and the town tanks as the service action.
